iAccelerate & Innovation Campus Entrepreneurial Women's Breakfast Series - Munya Andrews

Thursday 14th July

iAccelerate Womens Breakfast

Join us for the next iAccelerate Women’s Breakfast, co-hosted by iAccelerate and Innovation Campus, and hear from inspiring startup founder and barrister Munya Andrews.

iAccelerate Entrepreneurial Women's Breakfast Series
A key initiative of iAccelerate is the engagement with entrepreneurial women via our Entrepreneurial Women's Breakfast Series. Launched in April 2014 the iAccelerate Entrepreneurial Women's Breakfast Series aims to share the insights and stories of successful entrepreneurial women.
The breakfast series will provide a forum to discuss the challenges they have encountered and share lessons they have learnt. The series aims to encourage and inspire a conversation with the Illawarra community from the perspective of women, but will appeal to both men and women alike wanting to engage with the Innovation Ecosystem.

Guest Speaker: Munya Andrews, iAccelerate startup founder and barrister

Munya Andrews - iAccelerate Women's Breakfast

About the Speaker
Munya is an Indigenous woman, originally from the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
Her diverse 30 plus year career from being an author, university lecturer and effective senior public servant to a successful barrister, attest to Munya’s strong sense of resilience and her capacity to adapt and innovate. This success has been borne from a background of relatively high disadvantage, social exclusion and other challenges such as being removed from her birth mother at a tender age to being cared for by another Indigenous family, being hearing impaired and having not spoken until 5 years of age.
Forwarded by the University of Melbourne as a ‘leading Australian thinker,’ Munya’s intellectual interests and pursuits are varied and eclectic. She is equally enthralled by science, mythology and comparative religions and is intrigued by the ways in which these three disciplines interact and inform the other. In her book, The Seven Sisters of the Pleiades she analyses several world myths on this famous star cluster to reveal our common humanity while also exploring the links between science and spirituality. Passionate about her Indigenous heritage, Munya teaches Aboriginal Dreamtime as a way of maintaining her people’s language and cultural traditions in a world where Indigenous peoples struggle to assert their Indigeneity.
Proving the common adage that all lawyers are frustrated thespians, when she is not parading in her horse wig and gown, Munya has been known to grace the stage on more than one occasion, including a performance at the Lincoln Center on Broadway. An accomplished, passionate public speaker, she moves, delights, informs, entertains and captivates her audience.

iAccelerate Entrepreneur Club Meeting - Pat Mooney

 Thursday 30th October

iAccelerate - Pat Mooney

Our next Entrepreneur Club guest speaker is Pat Mooney, a long time supporter of iAccelerate. Pat will be presenting ‘Bootstrapping and navigating the capital raising road: a direction finder for founders'.

Almost every week, we see a new funding option announced for Australian business founders.  Crowdsourcing platforms like OurCrowd, VentureCrowd or Pozible are becoming more visible, while funds to emerge in the last year have included Scale, Square Peg, AirTree, etc.  It’s great news for business founders – there’s more choice.  But it also can be pretty confusing – when and how should you approach such sources, when should you simply ‘bootstrap’ your business and what does this mean for customer focus?  And where do government grants fit in all of this?

Pat Mooney is an experienced angel investor and tech company executive and an advisor at Commercialisation Australia.  He has also lectured in international entrepreneurship in Sydney and Hong Kong.  Pat works actively with a portfolio of tech companies he has funded, including companies in the Illawarra.  He has some views to share on when and how to fit these funding sources into your growth plans.’

About the Speaker

Pat has over 20 years experience in technology commercialisation and international business development.  He has founded three services companies, invested in three other startups and held Asia Pacific and global sales, strategy and marketing roles in telecommunications and software.

He is a Director at TiE Sydney and co-author of Enterprise & Venture Capital, sponsored by AVCAL and launched by the Australian Minister for Industry.  He lectures in entrepreneurship and strategy in Sydney and Hong Kong.

At Commercialisation Australia, Pat has funded and provided commercialisation advice to 23 early stage technology companies since 2010.  They include Critical Arc, Aquahydrex, Building IQ, IPscape, ingogo, Epicon and Quintessence Labs.

Eight of these companies have achieved significant exports and ten have secured follow-on funding. Four have raised in excess of $7 million each, with ingogo recently achieving $16 million on its path towards an IPO.
