Leave of Absence
Leave of Absence is a period in which HDR candidates take leave from their studies. LOA may be granted for medical, compassionate or other acceptable reasons. Students should discuss any periods of intended leave with their supervisors.
Postgraduate candidates become eligible to apply for Leave of Absence at the beginning of the second session of registration.
A student enrolled in a higher degree research course may be granted leave of absence for one year or, in exceptional circumstances, up to two years, provided that:
- The student has the written consent of his/her supervisor and
- Written application is made to the Manager of the Graduate Research School before the last day to enrol with academic permission, of the first session for which leave is sought.
All applications must be supported by appropriate documentary evidence and be approved by the supervisor and Head of Postgraduate Studies. HDR candidates are not enrolled during periods of Leave of Absence and the LOA does not count towards their time limits. Applications made after the census dates (31 March – Autumn, 31 August – Spring) for that session will be rejected.
