Community Engagement Strategy

Our Approach

The staff of the Commercial Research Unit (CRU) recognise that they can play a key role in the social and environmental development of the Illawarra region and broader community. This is achieved through:

  • acting as an efficient professional conduit between local businesses, not-for-profits, industry and government departments seeking to access the research and consulting expertise of University of Wollongong academic staff;
  • active participation of CRU staff in local volunteer programs (see Environment Strategy) or community initiatives relating to research;
  • making it easy for CRU staff to support their own personal community projects and volunteering; and
  • adopting strategies and standards of practise that demonstrate CRU’s respect for the environment, indigenous communities, diversity, social development and human rights.

Examples of Our Commitment

Volunteering

CRU staff are encouraged to participate in volunteer programs that assist our community and environment. Many staff are volunteers in a private capacity and all staff participate in the CRU team-based volunteer programs. Wherever possible, staff are supported in their private volunteer programs. For example, providing flexible work time for people to donate blood to the Red Cross or to rescue injured native animals for WIRES.

CRU staff also participate as a team in volunteer programs on a regular basis. This is seen as a good way to support team development, work/life balance and to assist our community. Projects are chosen by the team and although participation is not compulsory, most team members do participate.

Ethical Purchasing

Wherever possible, CRU will support local businesses or suppliers with demonstrated ethical practises. This could be as simple as using a local supplier of recycled paper or purchasing corporate greetings cards from a charity organisation. CRU will also consider the potential for human rights violations or environmental damage within its supply chain.

Research/Technology-Focused Community Involvement

CRU staff are encouraged to become involved in community-based professional organisations. Participation includes: membership of I3-NET (a local network of engineering and manufacturing companies) and membership of the Futureworld Ecotechnology Centre’s Board.
