Welcome to the Research and Innovation Division
The University of Wollongong proves that size is no barrier to excellence when it comes to research. In fact, size is a big advantage when it results in a responsive, focused institution that facilitates interaction and collaboration between researchers from different disciplines and includes research students in a personalised and collegial research culture. The University of Wollongong is one of Australia's best performing research institutions and is recognised internationally for research excellence. In 2006 UOW was included in the Top 200 Universities listed by the London Times and in 2007 was included in the Shanghai Jiao Tong Index top 500 research institutions in the world. Over the past five years the University has consistently ranked in the top group of institutions in the hotly-contested Australian Research Council Grants schemes. The University is a previous winner of the University of the Year for outstanding R&D partnerships and recently, the Good University Guide awarded the University a new five star rating for research intensity which saw it join an elite group of just eight universities at the top of the rankings in this important category. The recent opening of the UOW Graduate Medical School will provide new opportunities for health and medical research, a rapidly developing research area for the University. The University is home to the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science, is involved in a number of ARC and Cooperative Research Centres and has research institutes and centres supported by the National Food Industry Strategy, NSW Health, the Australian Navy, and industry partners including BlueScope Steel, Integral Energy and leading companies in the pharmaceutical and information and communication technology sectors. Our research is strongly linked to the region through local government and small business. These links will be further enhanced in the next few years with the opening of new research facilities at the Wollongong Innovation Campus. UOW researchers collaborate with researchers at leading international universities including Cambridge University in the UK and Harvard in the US and a number of the best institutions in the Asia Pacific. The following pages provide details of how the Research and Innovation Division supports research by our academics, research students and partners. Further, you will learn why the University of Wollongong's researchers enjoy international respect in the pages covering our research strengths. More details of our research activities can also be found on individual faculty pages. Whether in science, the arts, commerce, information technology, multimedia, health, engineering or education, the University of Wollongong makes a difference. Professor Judy Raper
