SmallTutor

SmallTutor is a research prototype and anybody can get an evaluation copy free of charge. To run SmallTutor you need an installation of Parc Place's Smalltalk-80 release 4.1.

The SmallTutor project involved two research projects. Aim of the first was to develop a tutoring system for the learning of object-oriented programming. Smalltalk-80 as example was chosen. There esist some hypertext-learning units (in German) as well as tools for the visualisation and animation of Smalltalk programs. There is also a metric tool (all tools are bilingual: German and English).

Aim of the second project was to build a framework of an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) with all necessary tools to develop usable learning units on whatever subject. The result was an authoring system with editors for structuring the subject matter building the hypertext structures. The author's work can be analysed, then he will receive hints from the advisor module (all components are bilingual except the advisor module). During the learning session the hypertext structures are dynamically recognized (using planning techniques) depending on the student's knowledge stste.

AuthorWare Professional

Authorware professional is a commercial multimedia authoring tool for learning and training applications that are content rich and interactive, and that make use of animation and sound. Authorware Professional is available for both MS-Windows and Macintosh. Files created on the Mac platform can be opened on the Windows. All logic and content, including graphics, path animations, sounds, and variables are converted. Designing an application on Macintosh and running it on a PC requires some sort of editing though. Further information can be obtained from the Australian supplier/distributor (Fax: 03-4573009, Tel 03-4577000).

During the last three years, here at Wollongong University, a wide range of computer aided materials have been developed using Macintosh version of Authorware Professional. These include three major modules of Computer Aided Tutorial (CAT), Computer Aided Laboratory Experiment (CALE), and Computer Aided Self Learning (CASL). Further information can be obtained by contacting Dr Ilango@uow.edu.au . Information about this project is available in some details here . Also available, the latest conference paper giving detailed information about these modules by clicking here .
