Faculty of Arts (Dean's Scholars)

www.uow.edu.au/arts/prospectivies/deans/

With a limited intake of ten students per year, the Bachelor of Arts aims to provide talented students with the opportunity to attempt subjects not normally available to first year students, giving them the opportunity to fast track their degree. Each Dean's Scholars student also has their own academic mentor - a member of the Faculty of Arts academic staff who offers advice and guidance in the Scholar's chosen field of study. As is the case with the Bachelor of Arts degree, the Dean's Scholars degree offers flexibility. Dean's Scholars are able to use the University's Student Exchange Program to undertake a period of study overseas, and participate in other programs such as the Australian National Internship Program, which enables them to undertake a one-session placement in Canberra, usually on the staff of a member of Australian Parliament.

Students also benefit from:

• Designated study space for faculty’s dean’s scholars complete with computers, printer, telephone, lockers and kitchen
• $500 book allowance
• Opportunities to attend Faculty workshops and seminars
• End of year Dean’s Scholars dinner with mentors and Faculty Executive (graduates are also invited to present on how being a dean’s scholar helped further their career).

Faculty of Creative Arts

This program is designed to give talented students a high level of individual flexibility by offering them the chance to combine two major areas of study within their Bachelor of Creative Arts degree. • Creative Writing
  • Performance
  • Sound - Music Composition and Production
  • Visual Arts*
  • Graphic Design and New Media*
  • Media Arts

* Combination not available in Dean's Scholars program

Dean's Scholars are allocated an academic mentor with whom they negotiate appropriate subject choices.  Students gain access to designated study areas, and receive extended library privileges as well as printing and copying allowances. Dean's Scholars are encouraged to contribute to the scholarly life of the faculty through to events in the Faculty's postgraduate program.

Dean's Scholars must maintain an average grade of 75 in each year of study to complete the program. If this requirement is not met, the student will be transferred into the Bachelor of Creative Arts degree, majoring in one area of study only.
