More success

We all have different ideas of what it means to be a success.

Maybe for you it's about achieving goals. Maximising your potential. The getting of wisdom. Achieving a balanced lifestyle. Or maybe it's simply the satisfaction of just getting out there and doing it!

Maybe you want to create a sense of stability for yourself, your family, or your community. Success could be earning enough money to buy a home, or charting a course towards a more peaceful future.

Perhaps it's about becoming a specialist in your chosen field. Or the prestige of being recognised by your peers. Perhaps you want to make a difference with your research findings. Or perhaps you want to be the one who brings the benefits of those findings into the lives of everyday people.

For us, we measure our success by graduate outcomes and student satisfaction. We are proud of our awards and achievements, and equate these successes to helping you to:

  • learn more
  • do more, or
  • be more.

Our reputation is enjoying exponential growth. In the words of the NSW Premier, Bob Carr, "[the University] has gone from a small, fledgling regional university to one of the most popular and innovative campuses in the State."

There's a certain prestige in being associated with a success story. Whoever you are and whatever your definition of success, we can help you get there.

More focused on you

Our size means we can be truly student-centred: Smaller classes. Individual attention. Available staff. A personal approach. Two-way communication.

We're here for you from the day you enrol, to guide and support you through the learning and lifestyle experiences you'll encounter.

We were awarded a five-star rating in the 2007 Good Universities Guides for "Educational Experience" including:

  • Educational experience: overall satisfaction
  • Educational experience: generic skills
  • Educational experience: overall experience
  • Staff qualifications

The University of Wollongong has been recognised as one of the top Australian universities for excellence in teaching performance under the ‘2006 Learning and Teaching Performance Fund'. UOW was the only NSW university placed in the top five universities recognised for best demonstrating excellence in teaching and learning.

You'll also find a wide range of support services to help you through your time at university. Whether you're coming straight from school; if it's been a while since you've studied; or if English is your second language - these services will be of immense benefit. And best of all, they're (mostly) FREE! Find out more about our support services.

Achieve your goals

  • Kick-start your career
  • Enhance your prospects
  • Change your career
  • Satiate a passion
  • Foster self-development
  • Feed your need to learn

Whatever your goals, UOW has a program to suit your needs.

If your goals are related to finding the job of your dreams, you'll benefit from what we call UOW's employment edge.

A major Australian metropolitan newspaper, The Sydney Morning Herald, has reported on its front-page (June 1, 2006) the University’s success yet again. Under its headline, ‘Wollongong graduates in front for jobs and money’, the newspaper drew on a survey undertaken by Graduate Careers Australia. The newspaper reported that 92.5 per cent of under 25s from UOW were working placing UOW number one in New South Wales.

The newspaper also drafted a table which showed that UOW graduates’ median starting salaries of $40,000 placed the University in the top band of Australian universities.

We were also awarded a 5/5 rating in the 2007 Good Universities Guide for "Graduate outcomes" - Getting a job; Positive graduate outcomes; Graduate starting salary. With such a broad base of skills, it is no surprise our graduates enter the workforce in record numbers. This rating puts us in the top 20% of universities for graduate employment and graduate starting salaries.

In addition, we offer a Career Management Plan, which can help clarify goals and suggest others you may not have considered. Our Careers Service offers advice and opportunities for employment once you've graduated. They also provide plenty of opportunities to connect you with employers, particularly in your final year.

A place to belong

You'll benefit from being part of an international community that draws students from around Australia and 70 other countries. And it's a friendly and safe community.

A student once said of UOW: "It's hard to walk from one end of the campus to the other without bumping into someone you know".

If you have the inclination, we have a wide range of clubs and societies you can be a part of. Everything from social to the sporting. Cultural through to the curious. Hobbies through to the humanitarian.

You'll be readily accepted, you'll have the opportunity to meet like-minded people, and make life-long friends.

Even after you graduate we'd love to hear about your successes and stay in touch. You'll always be welcome back if ever you should decide to pursue graduate studies.

We all want a place to belong. At UOW, we offer you that place.

More flexible

At undergraduate level, our popular double degrees let you specialise... twice. You can pursue your interests while furthering your career prospects.

Double majors within degree programs allow you to fine-tune your focus. You don't have to sacrifice one talent or interest for another.

Many of our programs allow you to choose elective subjects across different disciplines, so you can develop a range of skills and knowledge, which meet your own unique needs.
There's also the possibility of transferring between degrees (conditions apply).

Finally, you can choose to study full-time or part-time.

At postgraduate level, we aim to offer as many of our classes as possible at different times.

A balanced lifestyle

At the University of Wollongong, we're not just offering you a place to study...

It's also a place where you can broaden your mindset. Integrate international studies or a second language into your degree. Our International Exchange Program sends you out into the world. Our International Studies Program helps you make sense of it. We have partnerships with more than 100 universities around the world. We believe if you understand the world you can make a difference to it.

It's a place where you can stretch yourself - literally. Take a yoga class or try one of the many other value-for-money options for pursuing a healthy lifestyle offered by the Recreation and Aquatic Centre. There's a full range of indoor and outdoor facilities; a multitude of sporting clubs (both competitive and social); a first-class gym; and a variety of leisure and adventure activities for you to take advantage of.

And it's a place where you can clear your headspace. On campus, meet friends for a coffee and a chat; or see one of the latest live acts at our award-winning bar. Discounted movies, concerts, plays and art exhibitions are also options.

The UniCentre offers a good choice of takeaway food outlets and cafes. We also have a great à la carte restaurant. You'll also find everything you need right here on campus including a bank, bookshop, a retail outlet, post office, medical centre, travel agency, and hairdresser.
It's more than just a degree. It's a way of life!

An Inspiring Environment

The main campus lies at the foothills of Mt Keira between a green escarpment and the clear blue sea. We have respected our natural environment, creating a beautiful campus with streams, birds and gardens.

Off campus, try surfing, scuba diving or bush walking. Explore our coastal cycleways. Wollongong is an easy drive from National Parks and the marine reserves of Jervis Bay.

Visit Wollongong's cafes, cinemas, nightclubs and restaurants. Sydney's CBD is only 90 minutes away by car or train.

We are proud to offer you a quality of life you just can't get anywhere else.

More innovative

UOW is also the driving force behind Illawarra's planned Innovation Campus - a research, development and technology facility, which will cement Wollongong's future as a designated Centre for Excellence in IT&T. The University is working in partnership with the State Government and other stakeholders to develop a home for Australia's most visionary IT, communications, film, television and multimedia companies.

Some of our current research programs include exploring alternative treatments for cancer; improving the interface of cochlear implants with a hearing-impaired person's neural system; researching a new type of plant capable of 'eating up' arsenic from polluted soils; and developing a solar-powered water purifier to provide drinkable water for communities in water-poor communities.

We were awarded Australia's University of the Year in 2000-2001 for "Preparing graduates for the e-world" (Good Universities Guides). You'll have ready access to state-of-the-art facilities including computer laboratories and online access to enrol in subjects, and access subject results.

We were also awarded Australia's University of the Year in 1999-2000 for "Outstanding research & development relationships" (Good Universities Guides). Our research has a genuine impact on your learning: what we learn in the field, we bring to the classroom.
