ParentsWhy choose UOW?Completing an undergraduate degree is a major step towards achieving your future goals. And a world of possibility awaits you at UOW. We will provide you with the opportunity to improve your career prospects, ignite your imagination, build up your confidence and lay the foundation for new friendships. In short, UOW will help you to Be More. Discover why you (and your daughter or son) should choose UOW! What can your daughter or son study? If your daughter or son is still not sure about what they want to do, you may want to look over the UOW CourseFinder together so you can get some ideas. If they do know how they want their future to look, you can offer to help them find out what qualifications can take them there. Remember too that there are more ways than one! For example, if they want to be an accountant, some universities may offer a Bachelor of Accounting, but other universities may offer a Commerce or Business degree that specialises in Accountancy. Information for youWe understand your concerns At UOW, we recognise that you are a very important part of your daughter or son’s life, and together we can help each student achieve his or her goals. We understand your concern for their welfare begins with the basic things in life and extends to studying and living in a student-centred environment. You want to know that they’re going to fit in and be happy. But ultimately you want to know that your daughter or son has made the right choice of course and career. And that they’ve made the right choice of university. Your daughter or son is making an important transition into a whole new world. A world where they’ll be making most of the decisions for themselves. At UOW, we encourage this independence however we also provide all the support services they’ll need to make this transition a whole lot easier. If you want to find out more about UOW UOW runs a range of information programs aimed at prospective students and their families. These programs are designed to provide the information needed, to make the decision-making process easier. You can also download our parents guide which contains further helpful information. Personal tours The best way to get a feel for a university is to actually visit the campus. At UOW, we prefer a more personal approach to welcoming prospective students and their families to our inspiring campus. We offer free, campus and faculty tours, including tours of accommodation residences. The tour will be personalised according to the student’s interests and needs. A current UOW student will be assigned as the tour guide. They’ll be equipped to answer any questions you may have. Tours are available between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday throughout the year. Bookings are essential and can be made by calling 1300 367 869 or emailing uniadvice@uow.edu.au Information evenings Information evenings are held in Wollongong, Sutherland, Cronulla and Campbelltown around August/September each year. These evenings are primarily aimed at Year 12 students and their parents, however they will also be of benefit to Years 10 and 11 students and their families. Our information evenings give your students the chance to speak with faculty representatives, who can answer frequently asked questions, prior to UAC close of preferences. January Options day (change of preferences) After prospective students receive their results, they should check that they have met all entry requirements for any courses they have listed as preferences. After they receive their results, many students may consider a change of course, career, or even university. This is the day for students to visit the University (if they haven’t already done so) and speak with Faculty representatives to explore all their options. Parent’s Welcome As part of our Orientation activities, parents of first year students are invited to a welcome evening, hosted by the Vice-Chancellor. The evening is designed to be both a social and informative opportunity for parents to meet and talk with senior staff of the University. FAQsQuestion: If my daughter or son experiences difficulties – who can they get in contact with? Answer: If they have academic difficulties, they can speak directly with academics and/or administration staff within the Department or Faculty in the first instance. There is also a Dean of Students, who oversees the welfare of all students. Problems with admission, enrolment, assessment, progression, transferring courses etc may be referred to the Dean if the relevant Faculty or department cannot resolve them. If the student has personal difficulties, they can make an appointment with the Counselling Service, which provides free confidential, professional and sympathetic help at times of difficulty, conflict or crisis. Question: What sort of extra-curricular activities are available? Answer: On campus, students can meet friends for a coffee and a chat; or see one of the latest live acts at our award-winning bar. Discounted movies, concerts, plays and art exhibitions are also options. We have a wide range of clubs and societies they can be a part of. Everything from social to the sporting. Cultural through to the curious. Hobbies through to the humanitarian. Off campus, try surfing, scuba diving or bush walking. Explore our coastal cycleways. Wollongong is an easy drive from National Parks and the marine reserves of Jervis Bay. Visit Wollongong’s cafes, cinemas, nightclubs and restaurants. Sydney's CBD is only 90 minutes away by car or train.
