Questions:

What made you choose to study at the University of Wollongong over any other institution?
My first taste of UOW was at the 2004 Discovery Day. While I only spent a matter of hours on-camp us that day, I knew Wollongong was where I wanted to be. The easygoing atmosphere around the campus appealed to me from the outset, as did its location minutes from the beach. All the staff I met were helpful and friendly, and the student residences looked like great fun. UOW’s long list of awards and accolades also suggested one of the leading educations around. I can gladly say now as a UOW student that my perceptions on that discovery day have held true.

What do you like best about UOW?
I have met some amazing people at UOW – both staff and students – so I would have to say the people. I would also say the facilities we have here, and the very down to earth, laidback campus community.

What have you learned about yourself while studying at the University of Wollongong?
The UOW experience has opened my eyes to all the opportunities that exist out there if you have desire to chase them. I have further shaped my future career ambitions at UOW, so I now feel as though I know what path it is that I want to follow.

How do you feel the University of Wollongong is preparing you for the future?
UOW’s degrees provide students with a broad education that prepares them for a global marketplace seeking increasingly versatile, adaptable employees with a broad range of skills.

What’s your favourite class at Uni?
Design studio classes. These classes are where we take theory and concepts learned in lectures and, using industry-like briefs, try to come up with a creative solution. Interacting with the other design students in these classes and seeing all the different design approaches is always interesting.

Why did you choose to study your particular degree?
The Creative Arts/Commerce double degree allows me to combine my interests and widen my future career options. I have long held an interest in graphic design and branding. As this field employs so much marketing theory, it made sense to gain knowledge in both areas, which UOW’s Double Degree allows me to do.

What kinds of activities are you involved in on-campus?
I have participated in the Lunchtime Sports competition held by URAC. This is just a chance to have some fun in a social comp run on weekdays. I hope to join the University soccer team in 2007 and compete all around the Illawarra area.

What kind of career do you think you might like to pursue after University?
I would love a career that combines my eventual qualifications in graphic design and marketing. Working in a well-renowned graphic design studio in the area of branding and corporate identity is definitely what I’m working towards.

What’s it like living on campus?
I live at Campus East, which has opened my eyes to so much about the rest of the world. Coming from a town of 4500 people, the exposure I have had to people from around the globe living at campus east has been an amazing experience. Learning from students about other nations and cultures has been an education in itself. Living on campus is also heaps of fun, with sporting competitions, formal dinners and harbour cruises amongst the never ending list of activities to enjoy.

How did you find relocating to Wollongong for study?
Moving out of the house I had lived in for 18 years was a touch daunting, but Wollongong is an awesome place. What I love about Wollongong is the fact it’s big enough to provide all the city attractions and facilities yet small enough to always meet people you know walking down the street. With beautiful beaches at your doorstep and Sydney just an hour up the road, Wollongong is an ideal place to study.
