Questions:

What excited you most about coming to uni?
I was excited about moving away from home to the beach, meeting new friends and ‘expanding my mind’.

What scared you most about coming to uni?
After having had a gap year I was worried about how I’d settle into study again, writing essays and the like.

How were your expectations met?
Within a week I’d made friends for life at I-house; everyone is fantastically friendly.  I enjoyed my array of classes and found assistance at every turn where I needed it.  And the beach didn’t disappoint!

Why did you want to come to uni in the first place?
I’ve always enjoyed expanding my knowledge and learning new things, wanted to live the ‘uni life’, have the opportunity to travel and find a rewarding and well-paid job at the end of it all.

When did you know that you wanted to come to UOW?
I took a campus tour of UOW in October 2006 and was greatly impressed with the environment and what the university offered.  A scholarship offer made my decision certain.

If you had to give somebody one reason—and one only—to study at UOW, what would it be?
The emphasis on student involvement truly makes the Wollongong university experience so much more than studying.

What’s your favourite class? Why?
I enjoy Spanish because class sizes are small, teachers are genuine, and there are no long essays to write.  Also because I believe learning another language is an invaluable opportunity and skill.

Favourite thing about being at Uni?
I relish the opportunity to get involved, whether it’s through participating in community activities at I-House, playing lunch time sports, Black Opal Leadership Program or dancing the night away to a band at UniBar.

What’s it like living on-campus?
Fantastic! It’s an incredibly social environment but there’s still a huge emphasis on the academic side of things.  The community feel is something you couldn’t get anywhere else, and it is great having the cooking and cleaning done for you.

What have you taken from the experience? Friends from all over the world and a mountain of memories still to be built on!

Why did you choose your particular degree?
It provided the flexibility to let me study the wide range of subjects I’m interested in.

What kind of career might you like to pursue after graduation?
I’m not sure, but the broadness of my degree I know will open up many doors.

In your opinion, what’s the biggest difference between studying at high school and studying at UOW?
The onus is more on you the student at university.  It’s up to you to attend classes and submit your assessment tasks on time. You’re much more independent.

What activities are you involved in on-campus?
Black Opal, lunchtime sports, and I plan to get involved in the clubs and societies scene next year by joining FASSA and Amnesty International.

Is there anything you’d like to add?
I found the global reputation and emphasis of UOW very attractive. There are almost endless Study Abroad opportunities, including scholarships, and various publications have placed UOW amongst the top universities of both Australia and the world.
