Questions:

What excited you most about doing a postgraduate degree?
I had the opportunity to return to university and participate in a degree that would allow me to enter the workforce in a profession I had aimed to enter since I was in Year 10.

What scared you most about postgraduate study?
Was I making the right decision? I was leaving behind a career in political staffing, something I thoroughly enjoyed to spend four years studying in an area that interested me but academically was not my strength.

How were your expectations met?
The quality and diversity of students selected is amazing. Each student brings a unique perspective to the course which is rewarding in small group work. The staff are unbelievably supportive and encouraging, something that I did not experience in my undergrad degree.

Have you had any pleasant surprises?
Being elected the inaugral President of our Medical Students’ Society and having the opportunity to represent the UOW GSM at the Australian Medical Students’ Association Council.

Did you do your undergraduate degree at UOW?
No

If not, what made you choose to come to UOW to do postgraduate studies?
The MBBS course looked innovative and modern. The approach to learning was something I had experienced in my undergraduate degree during an exchange to the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. This approach complemented my learning style. I had also heard anecdotally, the supportive nature of the staff at UOW. Additionally, I also wanted to be near the beach yet not too far away from Sydney.

If you had to give somebody one reason—and one only—to study at UOW, what would it be?
The supportive nature of the academic and general staff.

What’s your favourite class? Why?
Clinical skills – it provides me with the opportunity to put into practise the theory we are taught in our lectures and tutorials.

Favourite thing about being at Uni?
Studying my dream degree.

What got you interested in this field?
I enjoyed the senior syllabus of PDHPE and chemistry, and I wanted a career that had lifelong challenges. Medicine seemed like a logical fit.

Do you think studying at UOW is preparing you for the future? If so, how?
Yes, it is preparing me to have well developed communication, clinical and interpersonal skills. It is also developing me to be a leader in my profession. This all round approach is highly desired in the medical profession.
