Questions:

How do you feel the University of Wollongong is preparing you for the future?
Basically UOW is preparing me for my future career. They offer so many workshops and resources to improve your resume, interviews and job prospects. Most importantly, in my subjects we are encouraged to think and make decisions, which prepare me for the corporate industry and how to be successful.

What’s your favourite class at Uni?
I really enjoyed a subject called “Culture and Emotion” which I studied this session. It looked at how all different emotions are presented in culture and made me really think about the way we are impacted in society.

Why did you choose to study your particular degree?
I love communicating!! I am interested in the media but also enjoy the practical elements of marketing and the broad range of potential jobs available. I enjoy the challenge of combining all the different elements of Marketing, communications and media to reach a desired goal. The fundamentals of marketing are simple to grasp but can be applied in so many different ways and involve all different types of skills. It is a growing area, as more government and non-profit organizations realise the value of marketing and corporate communications.

What kind of activities are you involved in on campus?
I am a member of URAC – the uni gym, and have just started attending Toastmaster meetings. I am signed up with the Careers Service to receive regular Job Alerts and receive updates on events held around campus. These include cheap movies, art exhibitions, markets, weekly BBQ’s, book sales, sporting events, happy hour and concerts. I also have the opportunity to represent the University at the Uni Games in touch football. There is definitely a lot to keep students occupied.

What kind of career do you think you might like to pursue after University?
I would like to be the marketing manager for a non-profit organisation – ideally working within the communications function. I think it would be great to apply the principles of marketing towards a worthwhile cause, so that I can stand behind what I am promoting. Money is always an attractive feature, but if I don’t enjoy what I am doing or who I am working with, there will be little motivation to go to work each day.
