Reviews @ UOW

Internal UOW reviews

As a self-accrediting body, the University is responsible for managing the quality of its academic programs and services. Reviewing progress towards achieving University and unit objectives, and identifying areas for improvement, are vital steps in ensuring that we deliver quality programs and services.

Regular review processes in place at the University include the following:

Strategic Plans

  • Annual review of progress against core objectives
  • Every three years, full review of the University Strategic Plan

Strategic Projects

  • Twice yearly review of progress

Major Committees

  • Annual review of progress against terms of reference and action schedules

University Policies

  • Every three to five years, or as required

Faculty Plans

  • Annual performance reports against plans

Operational Plans (e.g. Professional Unit Plans)

  • As required for professional accreditation purposes;
  • Approx. every five years under the UOW Quality Review Framework (Course Review Guidelines); and
  • On an ongoing basis to manage changes in disciplinary focus and the nature of the demand.

Courses

  • Ongoing informal review by subject coordinators;
  • Formal review by unit approximately every five years under the UOW Quality Review Framework(Subject Review Guidelines).

Subjects

  • Twice yearly review of progress

External reviews

In addition to its own internal reviews, UOW is subject to reviews by external bodies for a variety of purposes. For example:

  • the University as a whole is subject to periodic audits of quality assurance arrangements by the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA)
  • a number of our courses are reviewed by external professional bodies for accreditation purposes;
  • the University's Annual Report is tabled with NSW parliament and our performance reporting is reviewed by NSW Audit Office and by the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET);
  • Staff and Student Profiles are submitted to DEST annually for review, as well as various planning and resource reports.

These external quality checks provide us with an opportunity to:

  • consider planning, review and communication in an integrated way
  • encourage broad awareness and genuine commitment to planning objectives
  • recognise and reward effective practices
  • improve documentation and refine performance indicators
  • communicate our successes
