Primary and Secondary Uses of Personal Information
The University may use a student’s personal information for the following primary purposes, and/or any secondary purposes reasonably related to the below primary purposes:
- The administration of a student’s application, enrolment, academic progression, graduation and the provision of student services to a student by the University and/or its subsidiaries, including the publication of the student’s name and award in the graduation booklet;
- Verifying or exchanging a student’s information with other educational institutions when that student is transferring or engaging in cross-institutional study.
- Verifying the content of a student’s academic transcript with an external body when that student has applied for accreditation, professional qualifications or membership with that external body relevant to that student’s course of study;
- Responding to any requests for information from, and mandatory reporting to, Australian state or commonwealth government agencies and bodies such as but not limited to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), NSW Ombudsman, and the Migration Review Tribunal, or their equivalent or replacement entity.
- Responding to any demand for information from courts and/or tribunals or similar judicial agencies whether under subpoena or by force of law.
- Placing a student with an external body for the purpose of clinical or other placement or practicum experience as required by that student’s course of study at the University or otherwise approved by the University;
- Disclosure of that student’s personal and/or health information in exceptional circumstances if considered imperative for reasons of health or safety, such as if that student is missing for longer than three weeks;
- Any activities other than those in (1) above which are related to the activities of the University and/or its subsidiaries, including but not limited to administration, governance, provision of facilities, insurance, procedural rules, management, research, quality assurance, financial systems, academic development, teaching and learning generally, sporting and cultural activities for the benefit of the community;
- The University or its subsidiaries communicating with a student for fundraising or marketing purposes whether the student is an enrolled student or an alumni;
- Surveys which may be sent to a student to help the University and/or its subsidiaries evaluate and improve services and activities;
- Sharing of a student’s personal and/or health information for the above purposes between the University and its subsidiaries; and
- A University controlled entity, or an agent appointed by the University, collecting a student’s personal and/or health information on behalf of the University and disclosing that information to the University.
- Responding to any demand for information from the sponsor I have nominated on my enrolment application, and providing that sponsor with information relating to my academic progress, fees and other administrative matters;
Subsidiaries of the University include the Illawarra Technology Corporation (including UOW College), UniCentre, University Recreation and Aquatic Centre, and the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute.
