In addition to responsibilities in socio-legal research and
supervising postgraduate students, Rick teaches in research
methods and in social and theoretical perspectives on law.
Rick has a background in public sector management and
research consultancy in a range of legal, evaluation and policy
fields. He has taught social sciences, science and technology
studies and social aspects of environmental design at the
Universities of NSW, Sydney and Wollongong. He managed a public
community health service from 1976 to 1981. As a consultant
from 1981-1995 he carried out research, policy and planning
work in community services, urban planning and a range of
legal programs. Legal projects included the NSW Model Court
Project, Youth Justice Project, and Toxic Torts (PIAC), funded
by the Law Foundation.
Teaching Commitments
Rick supervises postgraduate and undergraduate student
research in areas relating to courts and justice systems and
legal sociology.
Students of the Centre for Court Policy and Administration
have carried out research in areas of alternative dispute
resolution, client services, case flow management, and tribunal
/ court program evaluation.
Rick is responsible for teaching research skills at
undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has developed
resources for Postgraduate Research in Law.
He teaches:
- LLB 313 Legal Research Project and in the LLM (International and Comparative) LAW 993 Research Essay;
- LLB 110 Legal Research and Writing;
- LLB/LAW 322 Subjects and Objects: Law, Things and Everyday Life
