Associate Professor Kay Maxwell joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Wollongong as Director of the Legal Practice Unit in January 2004. Prior to her appointment, Kay had practiced as a solicitor in country Queensland and in Brisbane. Kay first became involved in the practical legal training of future legal practitioners in 1989 when she joined the staff of the Legal Practice Course at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). From 1993 to 1997, Kay held the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Bar Practice Centre, a joint venture conducted by the Queensland Bar Association and QUT, and was Warden of the Bar Practice Course, the training vehicle for prospective barristers in Queensland, during that period.

Kay's research interests lie in the areas of civil procedure, advocacy, legal ethics and, in particular, in the area of vocational education. She contributes the Appellate Proceedings chapter to Litigators' Toolkit, an online Systematics publication and is presently engaged in co-authoring a forthcoming publication on pleadings in Australia.
