AN
ACCREDITATION PROCESS FOR IRRIGATION CORPORATION ENVIRONMENTAL
RESPONSIBILITIES
GEOFF HOLDEN
ABSTRACT:
Irrigation
corporations have replaced the former government controlled irrigation
areas and irrigation districts in New South Wales. The provisions
of the Irrigation Corporations Act 1994 (NSW), and the use of land
and water management plans, provide the framework for addressing
environmental issues arising as a consequence of irrigation corporation
operations. This article reviews the current arrangements and identifies
environmental responsibility issues. An accreditation process is
proposed to address issues raised. This process would place greater
responsibility with irrigation corporations for addressing their
environmental responsibilities, while placing government in a more
objective position for performance of its regulatory role.
