LEGISLATED ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTING REQUIREMENTS:
COMPLIANCE ISSUES AT THE GREAT BARRIER REEF MARINE PARK AUTHORITY
ROBERT GALE and WARWICK GULLETT
ABSTRACT:
Within a broader push for mandatory environmental reporting, many
public and private Australian companies must report on their environmental
compliance in their annual reports under s 299(1)(f) of the Corporations
Act 2001 (Cth). In a similar vein, Commonwealth organizations are
required to report annually on their environmental performance and
their contribution to ecologically sustainable development under
s 516A of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation
Act 1999 (Cth). An investigation of the Great Barrier Reef Marine
Park Authority's response to these reporting requirements indicates
that it has not complied with the environmental reporting requirements
and that changes in management priorities are required to address
this deficiency.
