Information for Candidates

Dear Candidates,

Below please find a list of guidelines which should answer most commonly asked questions. Should you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact me via email on levigarry@hotmail.com or lhg90@uow.edu.au.

Campaigning

> Campaigning in the form of ‘tickets’ shall not be permitted.

> Candidates may campaign with other candidates, but not under any group title, nor group policy.

> Candidates must campaign primarily on their individual abilities, attributes and suitability to the role(s) they are nominated for.  Candidates may campaign with reference to any policy/policies that they have.

> Candidates are not permitted to slander other candidates.

> For equity reasons, candidates are not permitted to campaign inside lecture theatres or classrooms. Election notices and announcements will be made by selected LSS representatives.

> Candidates are permitted to hand out flyers provided that they have been approved by the Returning Officer prior to distribution. The Returning Officer may at his/her discretion deem any materials as inappropriate and not allowable if he/she feels that the materials would provide any disadvantage to other candidates or work against the objects of the society or are otherwise inappropriate.

> Candidates may not use posters. Election posters including candidate information will be posted on campus by selected LSS representatives.

> Candidates must not campaign within level one of building 67 at the university or in the stairwells of building 67.

> Candidates may campaign online.

> Candidates may not distribute voting ballot papers or remove them from the polling place.

> Candidates may not submit votes on behalf of anyone other than themselves.

> Candidates who are on the 2008 LSS Committee may not sign up Academic Members during the voting period, unless they are in the LSS Office on their rostered shift.

> Please keep in mind that the LSS is a non-partisan association and therefore any political alliances of candidates are not relevant. Each position on the Committee needs to be filled with candidates who are suitable for the role.

Voting

> Only Academic Members are eligible to vote.

> Academic Members may only vote once. Where more than one voting form has been cast under a member & pin number, all votes cast under that member number will be void.

> Only votes which are submitted via the Faculty Assignment Box during the polling hours will be accepted.

> Votes will be void unless they contain an active member and pin number that match.

> Votes not made on the official voting ballot paper will be void.

> Voting shall be by simple ballot and with no preference system.

Counting

> Positions shall be determined in the following order by the Returning Officer (unless the Committee determines otherwise):

    1. President;

b.   Office Bearers (Administration, Finance, Education/ALSA, Competitions, Publications, Events)
c.   Ordinary members of the committee  (Communications Officer, Competitions Officer, Publications Officer, Events Officer, Senior Representatives (2), Second Year Representative)

> Counting shall be witnessed by one or more Faculty Members and/or the Immediate Past President. The Returning Officer has ruled that candidates will not be permitted to provide scrutineers on this occasion, to prevent results being circulated prior to the Law Ball.

> Where a person has nominated for multiple positions and wins multiple positions, they will be allocated one position in accordance with their preferences submitted with their nomination and will forfeit any other positions won. Forfeited positions will be allocated to the next highest candidate.

> The Returning Officer may take into the counting room a list of active member numbers and pin numbers, but the list may not contain names of who owns those member numbers.

Candidates to follow these guidelines

> Candidates may not authorise any person to act on their behalf in a manner contrary to these regulations.

> If candidates become aware of any person acting in an unauthorised manner on their behalf or to their benefit, they must request the person to cease the activity and also notify the returning officer.

> Candidates found to be in breach of these regulations may be disqualified from the election after a review by the LSS Committee or other board determined by the LSS Committee, who may pass a special resolution to disqualify the candidate.

Returning Officer Decisions are final

> LSS Regulations hold that decisions made by the Returning Officer or her/his agent shall be final. However, the LSS Committee may pass by special majority a motion to overrule any decision made by the Returning Officer or her/his agent, whereupon the role of Returning Officer becomes vacant.
