Solaiman has over 16 years of legal teaching and research experience at the university level both in Australia and overseas. He started teaching as a Lecturer in Law in 1990 at Islamic University, Bangladesh, where he was promoted to the positions of Assistant Professor in 1994 and Associate Professor in 2000 in recognition of his academic attainments. He also worked as a Postgraduate Tutor in Law at the University of Western Sydney in 1998 and as a Sessional Lecturer at the University of Wollongong in 2003. Prior to joining this Faculty of Law in January 2005, he was working as a Lecturer in Business Law at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia, where he took up the ongoing position in January 2004.

During his tenure at Islamic University, Solaiman acted simultaneously as Chairman of the Department of Law and Provost of a Student Dormitory quite apart from his regular academic assignments. By virtue of holding these administrative positions, he served as a member of different key bodies of the University such as Academic Council, Advanced Studies Committee, Admission Committee, Journal Committees and Faculty Committees. He also chaired the Academic Committee and Planning Committee of the Department of Law.

The major area of his research interest is securities regulation and his doctoral thesis focuses on investor protection in securities markets. He is a keen researcher, which is evident from his extensive publications of 30 research articles in various refereed journals in United States, United Kingdom, Continental Europe, Australia and Asia on diverse areas of law predominantly in the business area. He has also presented papers at various international conferences in, Europe, Australia and Asia. Before becoming a legal academic, he worked as a practising lawyer in Bangladesh, a common law jurisdiction, for a short period of time.
