Public Lecture by Justice Michael Kirby

All are invited to a public lecture this Thursday to be presented by

The Hon Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG, of the High Court of Australia

Date: Thursday 18 September
Time: 12 noon
Venue: 20.3

Topic: "The High Court of Australia - The Most Common Questions".

Synopsis: In July 2008, journalist Linda Greenhouse retired from the New York Times after 40 years as its Supreme Court correspondent. In several editions of the paper she sought to answer the most common questions that she was asked about the Court and its judges.

Now approaching his own retirement from the High Court of Australia in early 2009 after 13 years of service, Justice Michael Kirby will adapt some of Ms Greenhouse’s questions and seek to answer common questions about the High Court of Australia:

The most surreal moments?
Television in the High Court?
Incongruous perceptions?
Humour in the Court?
The background of the Justices?
Why the decline in the number of appeals?
Is public speaking prudent or dangerous?
Feuds between the Justices?
The role of associates / clerks?
