Lionel Fogarty is widely regarded as one of Australia's most significant and innovative poets, combining a passionate political voice with a unique approach to language. He was born on Wakka Wakka land at Barambah, now known as Cherbourg Aboriginal Reserve near Murgon, Queensland. His traditional background is the Yoogum and Kudjela tribes and he has relations from the Goomba tribe. He is well known for his work as an activist, especially on the issues of Land Rights and Aboriginal deaths in custody. His first work Kargun (1980) was published when he was twenty-two. With the appoval of his elders he has published a children's book Booyooburra (1993), a traditional Wakka Wakka story. His latest book is Dha'lan Djani Mitti, published in 2007 by Salt Publishing.
