Wireless - User Health and Safety
|
The type of radiation emitted from wireless base stations
is very similar to that of mobile phones. Thorough investigation
of the OH&S issues surrounding use of this technology
has occurred. The investigation revealed that equipment
used at the University of Wollongong for wireless technology
is based on the 802.11a
and 802.11b wireless ethernet standards, well within
recommended limits for occupational and general public
exposure.
The following information has been compiled to assist
in addressing any outstanding concerns individuals may
have regarding the wireless technology used at UOW.
1. The University commissioned a Wireless LAN Site
Survey which was completed in late 2003. An extract
from the report that deals with Safety Standards is
available in pdf format.
2. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear
Safety Agency has information on its web site regarding
radiation and health information.
3. John E Moulder, PhD, is a radiation oncologist at
Wisconsin University in the United States and is considered
an expert in the field of electromagnetic fields and
human health. His findings can be viewed at:
4. The IEEE (of Electrical and Electronics Engineers,
Inc) is a leading authority in technical areas ranging
from computer engineering, biomedical technology and
telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and
consumer electronics, among others. Information on mobile
technology can be found at:
5. The World Health Organisation has set up an International
EMS Project (Electromagnetic Fields). To read their
findings go to the World Health Organisaton Site at
http://www.who.int/en
and in the search box type emf project.
