Which wireless network standards are supported?

Inside buildings: 802.11a (54mb) and 802.11b (11mb)
Outside buildings: 802.11b (11mb)

How is the wireless network secured?

The "Wireless Protected Access" (WPA) standard is used to authenticate the user, and encrypt the wireless network traffic.
Note: Both the network card and network client need to support WPA in order to connect to the UOW wireless network. This should be kept in mind when selecting wireless equipment and software.

How and when can I connect?

The UOW Wireless Network is now available at Wollongong Campus (see coverage map). For configuration information, please refer to the user guides.

A number of wireless network cards have been tested by ITS Support and their WPA compliant drivers are now available. When selecting a wireless network card, remember the standards that are supported on campus:

Inside buildings: 802.11a (54mb) and 802.11b (11mb)
Outside buildings: 802.11b (11mb)

To make the most of the high speed wireless network available inside buildings, it is recommended that you select a card that enables connection to both the high speed 802.11a wireless network and the 11Mbps 802.11b wireless network. Also note that the card must support the WPA security standard. The Linksys a/b/g wireless adapter supports both networking standards, and is available from the UniShop on campus.
