Who can connect to the UOW wireless
network?
All staff and students with an active UOW email account
have access to the UOW wireless network.
Which wireless network standards
are supported?
Inside buildings: 802.11a (54mb) and 802.11b (11mb)
Outside buildings: 802.11b (11mb)
How is the wireless network secured?
The "Wireless Protected Access" (WPA) standard
is used to authenticate the user, and encrypt the wireless
network traffic.
Note: Both the network card and network client need
to support WPA in order to connect to the UOW wireless
network. This should be kept in mind when selecting
wireless equipment and software.
How and when can I connect?
The UOW Wireless Network is now available at Wollongong
Campus (see coverage map). For
configuration information, please refer to the user
guides.
A number of wireless network cards have been tested
by ITS Support and their WPA compliant drivers are now
available. When selecting a wireless network card, remember
the standards that are supported on campus:
Inside buildings: 802.11a (54mb) and 802.11b (11mb)
Outside buildings: 802.11b (11mb)
To make the most of the high speed wireless network
available inside buildings, it is recommended that you
select a card that enables connection to both the high
speed 802.11a wireless network and the 11Mbps 802.11b
wireless network. Also note that the card must support
the WPA security standard. The Linksys a/b/g wireless
adapter supports both networking standards, and is available
from the UniShop on campus.
Where can I connect to the UOW wireless
network?
The UOW Wollongong Campus is covered by a wireless
network. Student residences are in the process of having
wireless networking implemented and details will be
posted here as updates occur.
Does the University sell or loan
wireless network cards that can connect to the UOW wireless
network?
Wireless network cards (for PC laptops) are available
for loan by students and staff. Please visit the Short Loans
Desk of the UOW Library on main campus. The loan period
is 28 days.
You can check availability at http://library.uow.edu.au/record=b1486981
What can I use the UOW wireless network
for?
The wireless network is available to staff and students
for access to web, email SMP, SOLS, WebCT and other services.
Can I use SSH via the UOW wireless
network?
Yes - you can access services via SSH via wumpus.uow.edu.au.
SSH to Wumpus, and sign on using your unix username
and password, and then SSH to the server required.
