Undergraduate Orientation Program for New Students

Are you enthusiastic and committed to giving new students in Informatics the best chance
for succes?

What do you wish you had known when you first started uni?

The Faculty of Informatics is introducing a new orientation program called UStart@UOW and is seeking 6 enthusiastic student facilitators to develop and deliver the program. 

Successful applicants will be required to work as a team to develop and deliver a one day orientation program to new students. A one-day training session will be held on December 2nd to equip the successful facilitators with the skills and information required to develop the program. The program will be designed to ease the transition to university for the attendees and provide them with the information required to effectively navigate through their new university environment.

Facilitators will be required to:

  • December 2nd 2011 – attend a one-day training session
  • January 24th 2012 – meet as a university wide group
  • Provide regular updates on their progress.
  • Deliver the program in mid February 2012

In recognition of their participation, facilitators will each be paid $200 cash and receive a voucher to the value of $200 following the delivery of the program in February. In addition, a Certificate of Appreciation will be provided by the faculty.

To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate program in the Faculty of Informatics and have completed one year of full-time study (or equivalent). We are seeking applicants from all ‘walks of life’ so if you are interested, please apply in writing following the directions below.

1. Applicants should a provide a one-page statement (maximum 350 words) that describes why they think a program like this is important and why they wish to be involved.  

2. Briefly address the following criteria:

  • Details about your entry pathway – HSC or Direct entry (Mature aged entrant, TAFE, WCA or other).Applications close: Monday 14 November at midnight
  • Personal details – First in Family, Residence (from a rural or remote area), or other significant aspects.
  • Details of relevant experience (involvement in community programs, mentoring or other).
