School of Information Systems & Technology (SISAT)

Doing Research

University research is about finding new solutions to existing problems and answers to complex social and technical questions. It is incredibly interesting and challenging. Graduates with research degrees are highly sought after by both business and industry.

SISAT staff and students are currently doing world-class research on:
  • Business issues associated with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
  • The ethics of micro-chipping humans – should we or shouldn’t we?
  • The security of electronic health records – who should see your data?
  • Modelling supply chains to improve productivity
  • Predicting customer acceptance of radical new technologies
  • Integrating agent technologies and web services
  • The usability of aged care information systems
  • The development of web portals to support local communities
SISAT offers a comprehensive range of research degrees and other opportunities to be involved in university research. All our undergraduate degrees can be taken as “Honours degrees”, in which a student does an additional year of study, comprising a six month research project, a subject on research methods, and four coursework subjects, often taken from our Masters degrees. Entry into the Honours year requires a suitable Weighted Average Mark for the basic degree. At the postgraduate level, we offer both Masters by Research degrees and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Typically a Masters by Research degree comprises a one year long project and a single subject on research methods, although some students may do additional coursework subjects as well. The Masters by Research is available to students with an undergraduate Honours degree or an undergraduate degree plus other significant academic research experience.

The PhD is typically taken over three years full time and comprises a single project. Students who have not completed a research methods subject will be asked to attend our research methods subject. Entry into a PhD usually requires an undergraduate Honours degree, a Masters by Research or, in rare cases, an undergraduate degree with extensive industry experience in Research & Development.

We also offer small research projects as part of our coursework Masters degrees and students are welcome to become associate members of our research group. If you are interested in research, SISAT and UOW are great places to study.
