Bachelor of Mathematics (Advanced)
UAC course code 756512
The course is designed for students with superior mathematical knowledge on entry and aims to use this knowledge to enhance their studies.
The course differs substantially from other universities' 'advanced' degrees because of the emphasis on undergraduate project work. It links in with the strong research activities of the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics. Students will have far more contact with academic staff and/or outside business or industry that in usual for students at this level.
Each project subject will have two supervisors. The projects aim to induce confidence, independence of thought, generic skills such as writing and communication, and to make the students aware of the interaction between mathematics and statistics and the wider society. Students will have a range of skills extending well beyond a technical competence and a very high capacity in the tertiary literacies.
The degree is also flexible enough to allow one third of the subjects taken to be from another discipline. Such a program may involve a 'double major' (that is, an officially recognised program in another discipline). The most common choices of discipline for a double major are:
Accountancy
|
Information Systems
|
Computer Science
|
Econometrics
|
Economics
|
Geography
|
Management
|
Maths/Applied Statistics
|
Other majors are also possible.
Description
First year compulsory subject load is reduced. Students commence 200 level studies. In the second and third years work on the projects is undertaken.
Projects options include:
a topic of mathematical or statistical interest; a project on the mastery, the use and application of a computer package or the students' own programs; a secondment to business, government or industry on a project with significant math and/or stat component.
Typically students take two projects in two different areas of the school.
Course Duration
The Bachelor of Mathematics (Advanced) is a three year full-time degree or equivalent part-time.
Honours
After completing the 3-year Bachelor degree, a fourth year of study (Honours) is available to students with a credit average or better. This additional full-time year of study is a more challenging program that adds prestige to the degree. It would be an advantage for students who were aiming for a research-based job, or those planning to go on to a Masters degree or PhD.
Assumed knowledge
HSC Mathematics Extension 2. There is no HSC English pre-requisite.
Students with excellent results in Mathematics Ext 1 may apply, but would be required to do extra work before the course began to catch up. Please contact the Coordinator, Dr Lu, if you are in this position.
