Bachelor of Mathematics and Economics
UAC course code 756502
Economics is a social science that requires strong mathematical and statistical skills. It is the study of the allocation of limited resources, such as labour, natural resources, time or capital, for the maximum benefit. Economists look at why individuals, communities or nations make the decisions they do about their expenditure and consumption. The problem-solving, analysis, and logic skills provided by mathematics study is an invaluable asset in and economics career.
The Bachelor of Mathematics and Economics is an elite course that provides high level training in both disciplines, and equips graduates for careers in a wide variety of fields. It is also of significant advantage for graduates who wish to pursue research and higher degrees in Economics to have a strong background in Mathematics.
Students learn general principles which can be applied to a wide range of issues, including those in business, healthcare, the environment, the labour market, food supply, national economic policy, urban development, poverty, public utilities and international monetary policy.
In the first year, core (ie compulsory) subjects are taken and it is possible to swap between the Bachelor of Mathematics and Economics and the Bachelor of Mathematics and Finance degrees. The BMathEcon degree includes a major in economics and a major in mathematics, with the option of a sub-major in statistics.
In the fourth year, students with a weighted average mark of 67.5 may choose to do Honours. This is a more challenging, research oriented program that adds prestige to the degree. It involves the completion of a project on a special topic chosen by the student and his/her supervisor.
