Degree information
Honours is a prestigious level of study available to better candidates at the end of their undergraduate program. An honours degree will considerably widen the career opportunities of a graduate as a professional mathematician/statistician, and is also the normal mode of entry for higher research studies towards either a Masters Degree or a PhD Degree.
For the three year degrees [such as BMath, BMedMath and BMath(Adv)] honours is an extra fourth year. For the BMathFin, which is already a four year degree, honours is an optional stream during the fourth year.
The Honours program provides an opportunity for candidates to develop, to a sophisticated level, established theoretical and practical skills gained during their undergraduate course. An important aspect of the Honours course is the research project and thesis in which the student receives close supervision of a research topic. Students should enquire before the start of session regarding potential supervisors. Information about the supervisors can be found on the staff research pages and the titles of some past projects are also available.
In addition to a substantial project, students are required to do coursework. Seminars on presentation techniques and slide preparation packages may be given during Autumn session.
Entry Requirements
Only candidates who have completed three years (144 credit points), or an approved equivalent degree, with a credit average (or better) are eligible for entry to the Honours program in BMath, BMedMath and BMathFin.
For the BMathAdv(Hons), students must have a distinction average or better.
Approval is at the discretion of the Head of School.
Application information
Students interested in studying BMath(Hons), BMedMath(Hons) or BMathAdv(Hons) should complete an undergraduate application form available from the UniAdvice office on the ground floor in Building 36 or online. Completed applications and accompanying documents should be submitted to UniAdvice on or before the 2nd Friday of December for commencement in Autumn the following year, or by the last working day in June for entry to Spring session. Late applications may be accepted but it is dependent on the availability of a supervisor.
For the BMathFin(Hons), complete the internal enrolment form an submit it to the School office.
Due to the timetable of this degree, it is advisable to speak to potential supervisors before completing your application. All members of academic teaching staff are potential supervisors. They are listed on the School web pages.
