PAM Program
The School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics has created a mentoring program for all students enrolled in the Bachelor of Mathematics; Bachelor of Mathematics (Advanced); Bachelor of Medical Mathematics; Bachelor of Mathematics and Finance; Bachelor of Mathematics and Economics; Bachelor of Mathematics/Bachelor of Computer Science and Bachelor of Mathematics/LLB degrees.
This program is exclusive to our school and offers students academic advice on:
- students enrolment
- information regarding student exchange and possible studies
- information regarding scholarships which may be available
- honours year information
- careers advice
Attendance to all meetings is compulsory and typically lasts 15 - 30 mins.
Academic Advisors are academic staff within the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics. From time to time staff may be away on study or conference leave for one session. In the interest of continuity, these staff members do not participate in the program for the whole year so therefore students may have a change in advisor from year to year although this is avoided as much as possible.
First year students
First year students attend three meetings in the first year of their study. These occur in Week 1 of Autumn, Week 1 and Week 13 of Spring. The interview in Week 1 allows the student contact with the Academic Staff within the School and the subjects the student has selected will be the main topic. The interview in Week 1 of Spring will be a follow up of the first interview and discussion will centre on the first session results and any adjustments made to the enrolment. The interview in Week 13 concentrates mainly on the proposed course plan. This plan 'maps out' the student's studies for the remainder of their course. The plan takes into consideration strengths and weaknesses, pre/co-requisites, course rules and the students career intentions. Adjustments can be made to this plan, however, these decisions should always be made in conjunction with advice from the Academic Advisor.
Second year (and third year in a 4 year degree) students
Attendance is required at a meeting in Week 13 of Spring. This meeting discusses the proposed course plan made in the first year and is adjusted according to the students individual needs.
Final year students (potential graduates)
Final year students do not have a scheduled meeting planned, however, are welcome to see their Academic Advisor at any time during the year if they are having difficulty or have failed a subject.
In addition to the scheduled meetings as mentioned above, students are more than welcome to discuss their study plan with their Academic Advisor at any other time. Students should feel free to make an appointment with their Advisor directly. It is advisable to give your Advisor notice before a meeting so they may retrieve your file in order to save you both time and have your records ready to discuss.
Interview and course information
If you have any questions please contact the PAM Coordinator in 15.110, Ph: (02) 4221 3845.
PLEASE NOTE: Any student who does not wish to take part in this program is required to complete a waiver form available from the PAM Coordinator. This waiver form eliminates any contact to the student via the PAM Programme (unless directed by the student to reverse this action). The student acknowledges and accepts full responsibility for their enrolment and any problems associated with enrolment or graduation, or potential late graduation which could have been avoided with advice from the mentor or degree coordinator. This action will be taken into consideration with any special consideration forms, waivers for pre/co-requisites, and any other administration request directed to the Head of School of the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics.
