School Policies for Subject Information Sheets/Booklets

Contents

IT Policies

The following policies apply for all subjects offered by the School:

Assessment:

STUDENTS SHOULD NOTE THAT PASSING THE SUBJECT IS CONDITIONAL ON PARTICIPATION IN ALL FORMS OF ASSESSMENT. All students must participate in ALL forms of assessment (for example, laboratories/practicals and tutorials, where applicable). Students may not be awarded a passing grade unless they achieve at least 40% in ALL components of the assessment. Please note: the passing grade for most subjects is 50 or above. Therefore, a grade of 40% for all components of assessment may not be sufficient to gain a pass in the subject. Also failure to participate in all forms of assessment may result in any application for special consideration being ignored. The final mark released may be a scaled mark if the Head of School considers this necessary on the grounds of fairness and consistency. Unless otherwise specified, for all subjects, where an individual, unsupervised item of assessment is worth 10% or more, students are required to submit a paper version and an electronic version to assist with checking for plagiarism. This electronic version of the assignment is to be submitted in a format acceptable to the Lecturer of the subject.

Plagiarism (Copying):

Plagiarism is the use of another person's work, or idea, as if it were your own. The other person may be an author, critic, lecturer or another student. When it is desirable, or necessary, to use other people's material, take care to include appropriate references and attribution - do not pretend the ideas are your own. Be sure not to plagiarise unintentionally. For example use of phrases, sentences or paragraphs, or use of software algorithms, subroutines, techniques or designs produced by others, without clearly describing their origin, is a common form of plagiarism, which can attract severe penalties and even expulsion from the University. Learning Development has provided the following Web Site, which may be of assistance: Plagiarism.html.

PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
Non-detection of plagiarism in one case, cannot be used as a excuse for continuing the practice. Plagiarism has led to expulsion from the University. If you are in any doubt as to what plagiarism means, the article on 'Plagiarism and Intellectual Property' in the November 2001, Vol.39, No.11 issue of IEEE Communications Magazine, will answer most of your questions and you are strongly advised to read it. The University's policy concerning plagiarism is set out in Acknowledgement Practice/Plagiarism, which is available from Student Administration or the Web (see below). Oral examinations may be conducted to authenticate work.

Referencing:

The School has a standard for all subjects and the following applies. A numbered list of references must be provided at the end of the report/thesis. The list should be arranged in order of citation in the text, with only one reference per reference number enclosed by square brackets. Please refer to the IEEE website: auinfo03.pdf.

Non-Discriminatory Language:

Staff are committed to the use of non-sexist and non-racist language in all work submitted for assessment.

Disabilities:

If a student with a disability requires reasonable accommodation in a subject, they are strongly advised to discuss the issues early in the session with one of the following people: the Subject Co-Ordinator; the Faculty Disability Adviser; and/or the Student Disability Adviser.

Cover Sheets:

For assignments, tutorials, etc., worth 10% or more and for all practical reports, students must complete the appropriate cover sheets available from the School Office, 35.G43 or download them from the School's Web Site: Cover Sheets.

Collection of Written Assessment Tasks:

Students are advised that written assessment tasks, such as practical reports, assignments and tutorials may be collected from the Stores Officer in 35.132A between the hours of 12.00 noon and 1.00 p.m., Monday to Friday, during the session. Those unclaimed at the end of the session:

(i) will be available for collection on the last day of the Study Recess each session from 35.132A; and
(ii) those not collected on the last day of the Study Recess, will then be available for collection on the last day of the first week of the following session from 35.132A - any unclaimed at that time will be destroyed.

Occupational Health and Safety and Workcover Issues - Laboratory Safety:

The University is bound by OH&S and Workcover Regulations and, hence, so is the School. The School is currently developing new policies regarding the procedures to be adopted by both students and staff involved in constructing project work, specifically those where the constructed project is to be connected to the mains supply. These policies will affect the way students work within the School so you will be advised as soon as the new procedures are available. In the mean time, please ensure that you have read the Laboratory Safety Instructions and any other venue specific instructions that may be displayed within the School, in particular, make sure that you are familiar with evacuation procedures, and check with the Workshop Co-ordinator (Room 35.128) if you are unsure of how to proceed.

Notices:

Policy Statements and other relevant notices are displayed on the School's Notice board (outside Room 35.128) and/or the School's Web Site at: http://www.elec.uow.edu.au/subjects.html. All students are advised to consult this notice board and the Web Site regularly as they are used as official means of communication with students. Policies and requirements with regard to special consideration/medical certificates are included in the above.

How to Resolve Problems:

If you have a problem or concern concerning your academic experience, the Faculty of Informatics has a procedure, which you should follow. The procedure can be found at: Informatics Grievance Procedures.pdf.

Use of Calculators in Examinations:

The normal School Policy is that only the calculators approved by the Board of Studies are approved for use in examinations.

Special Examinations:

The School reserves the right to offer special examinations to students as determined by the School Assessment Committee based on evidence presented and overall performance. The times for special examinations and other information related to them will be posted on the School's Web Site under 'Subject Notes' and also displayed on the notice board opposite Room 35.G25. Students, particularly those students who have requested special consideration, should check this Web Site regularly for updated information. Responsibility rests with students to find out if they are to be given a special examination and to contact the School if necessary.

Note:

Students may be offered special examinations without requesting special consideration, it is therefore important that regardless of whether students have requested special consideration, all students should consult the Web Site (http://www.elec.uow.edu.au/subjects/) to see if they have been offered any special examinations.

Student Reception and Resource Centre:

The Faculty of Informatics now has a "one stop shop" for all student enquiries. This is located on the first floor in Building 3. If you have any enquiries or are not sure what your options are, this is your first point of contact. Staff are available to assist with helpful advice, such as "what course of action is open to you" or "who to see". Any forms you are required to complete will be available, as well as material on all courses offered by the Faculty. The staff will be able to make appointments for you to see the Sub-Dean, International Officer, the Dean and other relevant academic advisers. The contact number is 4221 3606. However, enquiries specific to the subjects that you are enrolled in should be directed to the Lecturer or the Subject Co-ordinator of the particular subject.

Forms specific to SECTE subjects may be obtained from the display cabinet outside Room 35.G43 or from the staff in Room 35.G43.

Internet Access:

The University provides Email and Internet Access for all students. This access is for academic purposes only. Students should be aware that quotas are strictly enforced and students are expected to use the free email account provided by the University. Students are warned that use of HotMail (and other non-UoW web mailaccounts) consumes quota at a high rate. Quotas will not be renewed for students using their access for non-academic purposes such as downloading music, entertainment or recreation or access to other mail accounts such as HotMail. Details of the University Policy and Guidelines for Email and Internet Access are available at http://www.uow.edu.au/student/sols/ under "email & internet". The Guidelines clearly explain the quota system that the University applies.

Students are encouraged to go to the following web sites, where appropriate, to seek greater clarification on matters related to study at the University:
