Getting involved in the In2Uni Program is a great way to enhance your student experience at UOW and to give something back to the local community. You will have the opportunity to work with a large student based team, undertake professional development courses and enhance your own professional skills in a team based and friendly environment!
In2Uni Program
In2Uni is a collaboration between the Department of Education and Communities (DEC NSW), Illawarra & South East Region, and the University of Wollongong (UOW). The program is offered to selected primary and high schools on the low socio economic status (SES) national partnership and Priority Action Schools Programs (PSP). The program is operated by UOW in the hope that it would enable students to access, participate and succeed in higher education.
Job Description
The successful applicants will be employed in a casual position within the Academic Services Division (ASD). They will provide tutoring and mentoring to school students in conjunction with school teachers and the In2Uni Program Coordinator. Tutoring and mentoring tasks will involve groups of students with teacher supervision. Academic Mentors will be required to travel to schools located within the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions and be flexible in terms of activities organised at individual schools. In addition there may be some activities at UOW Bateman's Bay, Shoalhaven and Wollongong campuses relative to the campus that you studying at, that you are asked to participate in. Successful applicants will be required to undertake a Working with Children Check.
The schools currently included in this program are Albion Park High School, Batemans Bay High School, Bomaderry High School, Corrimal High School, Dapto High School, Kanahooka High School, Lake Illawarra High School, Illawarra Senior College, Illawarra Sports High School, Moruya High School, Moss Vale High School, Nowra High School, Oak Flats High School, Shoalhaven High School, Ulladulla High School, Vincentia High School, Warilla High School, Warrawong High School and 25 local primary schools.
Academic Mentors will undergo a two day training program to prepare them for their role in schools. The training will encompass workshops on dealing with diverse personalities, child protection and mandatory reporting training, operating effective mentoring sessions and the administrative duties involved in the role.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills
Essential
- Currently undertaking an undergraduate degree or postgraduate at the University of Wollongong
- Ability to work with a range of students including primary and high school.
- Applicants must have proven strong skills in the areas of Maths, English or Science.
- Strong interpersonal skills underpinned by communication, empathy and sensitivity will be needed in this role.
- Applicants will need to be willing to follow directions from school teachers and be flexible in terms of time availability to fit in with a variety of school activities
- Applicants should have a strong desire to help raise the educational capacity of students with whom they are working
- Applicants should have high level management skills to ensure the projects are completed by the due date, but at the same time encourages the students to maintain independence and personal responsibility over the project
- Applicants should understand, facilitate and guide student learning. A good mentor should not directly provide students with an answer, but instead point them to appropriate resources and offer opportunities for learning
- Enthusiasm, flexibility, maturity, responsibility and teamwork will be needed in this role.
- Academic Mentors will need to make their own way to and from the schools to which they are employed.
- Successful applicants will be required to undertake a Working with Children Check

- Have a credit average in their undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
- Applicants should be willing to share their positive educational and UOW experiences
The role is casual – $25.41 per hour – University of Wollongong Rate 1
Total hours of work will vary. On campus activities will also form part of the role.
