Rural Appreciation Weekend

RAHMS (UNSW’s rural health club) invites all SHARPies to this annual multidisciplinary and multi-club event which is held in Dunedoo over the Labour Day long weekend (October)!

RAW is a great opportunity to experience rural life and the weekend includes workshops, guest speakers, team building exercises and much, much more! For more information about RAW, check out the RAW website.

NEWS FLASH!!!
ABC TV’s Landline program ran a report on 14 Nov 2010 featuring the Rural Appreciation Weekend event. The piece included interviews with Shannon Nott and Kim Webber, and there were also cameos by many SHARPies and other NRHSN students. A webcast (click “play video” at the top of the page) and transcript of the program can be seen on the Landline website http://www.abc.net.au/landline/content/2010/s3065825.htm

Rural Appreciation Weekend 2008

The 2nd Annual Rural Appreciation weekend was held over the October 3-6 long weekend for more than 130 health students from 11 Rural Health Clubs in NSW and the ACT.

Kay Kent, Rob Battisti, Erin Byrnes, Sarah Cremona, Theresa Crossing, Teena Downton, Amanda Francis, Viktor Ko, Marisa Saverimuttu, Perrie Simovic and Rohan Wilson represented SHARP on the Weekend which featured plenty of fun, teamwork and networking opportunities. Attendees were able to develop an appreciation for life on the farm by camping under the stars and seeing sheepdog, cattle work, shearing and snake displays. Furthermore, the local health professionals who came and spoke provided insight into the benefits of choosing a career in rural health.

The program also included:

  • a yarn with locals at the Dunedoo Golf Club
  • B&S Ball
  • bushwalks
  • a farm tour
  • RAW championship competition (which we and our MARHS & MIRAGE teammates won!)
  • movie under the stars
  • wine tasting at Prince Hill Wines

All SHARP delegates had a great time and would recommend it to any student looking for a positive rural experience. Special thanks go to Kay Kent whose pancakes were a hit once again, and Rohan Wilson who also drove the mini-bus to and from Dunedoo.

Rural Appreciation Weekend 2007

In October 2007, SHARP and RAHMS got together to hold the inaugural Rural Appreciation Weekend (RAW) at Shannon Nott’s family farm in Dunedoo. The weekend was packed with plenty of fun and informative activities that gave the 36 students, who attended, a feel for what it’s like to go and live rural!

SHARP and RAHMS members got to get to know each other well over the 3 days of activities including a tour of the 5,000 acre farm from the back of a bogey truck, talks from local rural doctors, a snake education session, sheep dog and sheering demonstrations, and an Aboriginal cultural awareness session. Everyone had a fantastic time, as you can see from the photos! You can also read Teesha Downton's report.
