Julian Gold, Director, Albion Street Centre
As the Director of the Albion Street Centre, Professor Gold has 20 years experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with HIV and other STIs. He is a recognised expert in his field in Australia and in the Asia Pacific region where he has travelled and consulted extensively with governments and healthcare facilities. Professor Gold regularly advises on the establishment of health services and training of workers involved in HIV/AIDS disease management and prevention. Dr. Gold established the national HIV/AIDS surveillance program in Australia and he has served on all of the National Advisory Committees related to HIV, infection control and healthcare worker safety. Dr. Gold has been principal investigator for more than 40 HIV/AIDS therapeutic clinical trials and more than 50 clinical studies funded by the Australian Government, international donor agencies and the pharmaceutical industry. He has published more than 100 peer reviewed scientific papers and chapters in books. Professor Gold has extensive project management experience as Project Director for the AusAID-funded AIDS Ambulatory Care Project in Thailand and projects in Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Lao PDR and the Pacific.
Over the past 15 years Dr Gold has been involved in curriculum development, teaching and assessment of healthcare worker training in resource poor countries. He has a particular interest in the implementation of techniques for monitoring and evaluation of health services in these settings to ensure the most effective use of limited resources. Dr. Gold has a busy patient load as part of the clinical service unit of the Albion St Centre. In addition, he is responsible for almost one hundred staff in Australia and overseas.
Charmaine Turton, Director,
International Health Services, Albion Street Centre
Charmaine is the Director of the International Health Services of the Albion Street Centre (ASC). Charmaine is a clinical psychologist with over twelve years experience in the field of HIV, both in Australia and in the Asia Pacific region. Over the last decade, Charmaine's roles have included the management of clinical and international activities, the provision of counselling and psychological therapy to people living with HIV (PLHIV), the development and delivery of health care worker training and HIV counselling-related training, and the supervision and mentoring of counselling students and intern psychologists. Charmaine has also been involved in various research projects and evaluation activities; most notably an impact evaluation to assess a five-year ambulatory care and health care worker project implemented in Thailand.
Charmaine has worked in a technical advisor capacity on many international projects. She has extensive experience in the areas of voluntary counselling and testing, psychosocial and mental health issues for PLHIV, and general HIV education and health care worker training. She has also been a significant contributor to written materials and training packages for HIV prevention, care, support and treatment.
Maggy Tomkins, Clinical Nurse Coordinator,
SafeHandS, Albion Street Centre
Maggy has twenty years experience in HIV, clinical nursing and workplace education. Currently, Maggy works with International Health Services at the Albion Street Centre and coordinates the SafeHandS project. Maggy has provided education and arranged clinical placements and study tours for health care workers from throughout the Asia-Pacific region. She was a technical advisor for the Bamrasnaradura Hospital (Thailand) HIV/AIDS Ambulatory Care Project and has also had planning, development and implementation roles in the Indonesia-Australia Special Training Project in HIV/AIDS, an HIV/AIDS Train the Trainer Program in Fiji and an HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention Short Course for Indian Health Officials. She is a co-author of the World Bank Guidance Note on Health Care Worker Safety based on consultations and workshops in the South East Asian region. Maggy is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Hartford, USA.
Philip Melling, Clinical Nurse Consultant,
Infection Prevention and Control Unit, Albion Street Centre
Philip is responsible for the provision of advice, resources and training in infection control and health care worker safety for a diverse range of health care settings in the state of New South Wales. He regularly conducts needs assessments and audits of infection control issues in health care facilities and delivers education and training for health care workers in infection control, transmission and prevention of blood borne pathogens and occupational exposures. He has undertaken many initiatives in conjunction with the New South Wales Department of Health to develop best practice approaches and provide advice on infection control in hospitals and other settings.
Philip also manages the NSW Needlestick Injury Hotline which provides a free 24-hour-on-call confidential expert advisory service for needlestick injuries or other exposures to a body fluid.
Philip has been a technical advisor in infection control for projects in Thailand, Fiji, Cambodia and Indonesia. Philip is a co-author of the Guidance Note on Health Care Worker Safety.
Paul Peng, Director,
Library Services, Albion Street Centre
Paul manages the Albion Street Centre's HIV/AIDS Reference Library. Paul has worked in library and information management since 1994, and has considerable experience in identifying, developing and maintaining information dissemination. Paul also participates in the NSW HIV/AIDS Library Network, and develops strategies to maximise the utilisation of Albion Street Centre information resources.
Alexandra Wilson, Senior Project Coordinator,
International Health Services, Albion Street Centre
Alex has over 5 years experience in the coordination and policy development of international development assistance. Currently Alex assists with the coordination of the Albion Street Centre's international projects. She has been involved in the coordination and research for development of several training manuals for WHO. Prior to joining the Albion Street Centre, Alex was a project officer with AusAID for several years. Alex has also lived in Malaysia for 2 years and has qualifications in international relations and communications.
