General Information
- Your guide to the 4th Year in Psychology 2012 [pdf 478kb]
Current Information and Announcements
Fourth Year in Psychology from 2013 and Onwards:
The School of Psychology will not be taking any new students into the Postgraduate Diploma, Psychology IV (the non-honours fourth year of the Bachelor of Psychology) or the Masters in Science (Psychology) after, 2012.
In 2013 and onwards the School of Psychology will only have one fourth year option: Honours in Psychology. The entry requirements for Honours, will remain the same (see 4th Year Guide accessible from this page), however in 2013, we will take more students into the Honours, and expect the cut-off to be about 70% of the subjects included in the entry calculation. (note the means of calculation for UoW graduates is slightly different from that for non-UOW graduates)
The only current fourth year subjects that will be available in 2013 for on campus students are GHMC979/PSYC479 (Major Research Project, 18 credit points), GHMC989 (Advanced Abnormal Psychology, 6 credit points) PSYC410 (Honours Research Project, 24 credit points)
What this means:
A. For those who planned to go into the Post-Graduate Diploma, Psychology IV (the non-honours fourth year of the Bachelor of Psychology) or the Masters in Science (Psychology) in 2013.
You will only have honours to apply for, so, make sure you have met all the requirements for honours entry, namely you have:
- completed a degree with a major in Psychology;
completed PSYC347, PSYC348 & PSYC354 (Note: and thus including pre-requisites for PSYC354) & PSYC251 (Note: we will be flexible about PSYC251 for the 2013 applications) - completed at least 76 credit points of Psychology subjects at 200- and 300- levels.
- at least a credit average for Psychology subjects at 200- and 300- levels (but entry is competitive and the cut off is expected to be about 70%).
B. For those who have started in fourth year in 2012 part time.
The only subjects you can leave over until 2013 are:
- GHMC979/PSYC479 (Major Research Project, 18 credit points),
- GHMC989/ PSYC989 (Advanced Abnormal Psychology, 6 credit points)
- PSYC410 (Honours Research Project, 24 credit points)
Make sure you do all your other subjects in 2012.
C. For those taking the Postgraduate Diploma under the Faculty of Education's ‘School Counsellors in Training’ Program.
- You will not be affected by School of Psychology's fourth year changes for 2012 and 2013.
- Some revision in the program may be expected 2013 & after with any new arrangement between the University's Faculty of Education and the New South Wales Department of Education.
The revised honours degree is expected to look like this
A 48 credit point Honours program comprising:
- PSYC410 Honours Empirical Thesis (includes attendance at research groups) (24 credit points)
- PSYC4xx Theory and Methods (8 credit points)
- PSYC4yy (Psychological Assessment: Principles & Applications) (8 credit points)
- PSYC4zz (Psychological Intervention: Principles & Applications) (8 credit points)
- 2012 4th Year Thesis Project Topics
- Applications for 2013 entry are due on 31 October 2012.
- Graduating with a BA or BSc and proceeding to Honours
Students are able to graduate with both BA & BA Hons and BSc & BSc Hons. So students do not need to withdraw from graduation at the end of their third year if they find that they have got into honours, but can graduate with a BA or BSc, and then proceed to a BA or BSc Honours.
