Making the most of your study time
Good research skills will be essential to you during your academic career. The University has developed a series of tools and resources that you can utilise to make your study time more effective. In addition to the StartSmart, UOW has created the OHS Roadrunner which covers specific information related to your OHS/OHP subjects. This resource outlines the referencing and citing information you will need to ensure accurate recognition of the information you use in assignments, as well as useful links and recommended readings to get you started.
Start Smart
StartSmart (essential academic information skills) is an introduction to research skills and the technology that will enable you to find information. An independent learner (a UOW Graduate Quality) has the ability to locate, critically analyse, interpret, evaluate, and use information. It is essential not only at university but also in professional and private life.
While StartSmart is not compulsory for postgraduate students, it is strongly recommended that you complete it. It outlines the skills that will get you started in your studies and is especially useful for students who have not participated in tertiary studies for some time. It will also allow you familiarise yourself UOW Library search engines while providing advice on how to make the most of your online research.
As StartSmart is intended to assist in your studies, you are encouraged to complete the Guides and Quiz at the beginning of your first session. You can complete this module by following the instructions provided.
It is made up of two components: the training guides and the online quiz.
- The Guides
The online Guides prepare you for the online quiz. The guides include information on Academic Culture, Finding Books, Finding Journal Articles and Academic Integrity. - Online Quiz
Once you have worked through the Guides you are encouraged to complete the Quiz. Follow the links to start the quiz and choose the option to enrol in the course. Once you have achieved a score of 10/10 you can print the certificate as proof of successful completion.
