Welcome to the Occupational Health & Safety Academic Programme Guide.
The guide will help prepare you for study at UOW and has been developed to suit the needs of occupational health and safety, and occupational hygiene practice students. It will connect you to information, services and contacts you may require during your academic studies and will also provide tips and resources to facilitate development of self-directed study skills. Along with your academic team this resource will help provide flexible support when you need it.
Programme Overview
The University of Wollongong (UOW) has been offering courses in OHS since the mid 1980’s, and in 2009 commenced a programme in Occupational Hygiene Practice.
We currently offer four courses, which are:
- Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
- Master of Science (Occupational Health and Safety)
- Graduate Certificate in Occupational Hygiene Practice
- Master of science (Occupational Hygiene Practice)
All courses have been developed in concert with industry, regulators and professional organisations and are under a process of constant review and improvement to reflect the ever-changing OHS environment.
One of the strengths of the OHS academic programme at UOW is a focus on developing students who have a sound theoretical base in OHS topics together with skills in their practical application. To ensure these skills are developed; the majority of lecturers have a strong industry or government regulatory background and a willingness to share their experiences with students.
The recent development of the Graduate Certificate and Master of science (Occupational Hygiene Practice) is part of a global training initiative of which UOW has been a core developer of training materials. The programme is unique in that it is based on a “Fly In – Fly Out” concept where students undertake intensive face-to-face teaching in blocks of one week for each subject, followed by online assignments and an examination. Subjects are spaced throughout the year with two subjects being scheduled back to back where possible and this process is repeated approximately every three months until the degree requirements are achieved.
A similar concept has been introduced for the Graduate Certificate and Master of Science (Occupational Health and Safety) as this style of subject delivery is popular with both students and employers.
On behalf of the academic and support staff of the OHS programme I would like to welcome you to review the programmes we offer and if you have any questions please feel free to contact us.
