Nutrition and Dietetics
The School of Health Sciences offers a variety of nutrition and dietetics courses that allow varying degrees of flexibility in subject choice, majors and combinations with other disciplines. The courses focus on equipping students with strong clinical and professional skills underpinned by a sound scientific knowledge. We currently offer:
Undergraduate Programs
Bachelor of Science (Nutrition)
The Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) provides a general education in the study of human nutrition. Core areas of study include biochemistry, human physiology, nutritional metabolism, as well as community and public health nutrition.
This degree prepares you for pathways towards Honours research and postgraduate dietetics, public health and other medical and allied health fields.
Graduates are frequently employed in the health, health promotion, medical, medical research, food industry, private practice and clinical health fields.
Students who have achieved a distinction average in the first two and a half years of this degree may be invited to transfer into the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics, subject to availability. Please see Course Handbook for full details.
Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics
The Bachelor of Nutrition & Dietetics emphasises professional development and provides students with opportunities to gain clinical, food service, research and community and public health competencies. It builds on knowledge of basic sciences in nutrition through to research and practice contexts.
Clinical experience is undertaken in general and specialist hospitals in the Illawarra south-eastern regions of Sydney and rural areas. Placements are offered in a variety of community and industrial settings.
Graduates are employed in health services, industry and community services in a broad range of settings. Graduates draw on their professional competencies to translate nutrition science to practice. Please see Course Handbook for full details.
Postgraduate Programs
Master of Science (Nutrition and Dietetics)
The Master of Science (Nutrition and Dietetics) consists of coursework and practical placements, and develops knowledge and skills required by nutritionists/dietitians working in a variety of community and public health settings, food industry, private practice, hospitals, and other tertiary health care facilities. This course is only available on campus and there are no distance education options. Please see Course Handbook for full details.
Master of Science (Nutrition, Dietetics and Exercise Rehabilitation)
The Master of Science (Nutrition, Dietetics and Exercise Rehabilitation) is designed to meet core fields of competency defined by the dietetics and exercise science professions, including key areas of clinical dietetics practice, community and public health nutrition, food service systems management, exercise prescription, exercise rehabilitation and clinical practicum studies. It should be noted that the last intake into the Master of Science (Nutrition, Dietetics & Exercise Rehabilitation) will be in 2012. Furthermore, all applicants for the Master of Science (Nutrition, Dietetics & Exercise Rehabilitation) must hold a Bachelor of Science (Exercise Science and Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong. Graduate Certificate in Advanced Dietetic Practice
This is a course for practising dietitians (with a minimum of 3 years professional experience) who wish to undertake further study and develop their career whilst continuing to practise. The course provides opportunities for students to: Enhance their skills of reflection ; Enhance their skills of research design, data collection, program evaluation and statistical analysis; Select and apply appropriate approaches in order to advance dietetic practice; Engage in academic debate involving issues relating to practice and evidence-based approaches. The course will also assist current Accredited Practising Dietitians who may wish to apply for the title of Advanced Practitioner with the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA). On completion of this course, students will be able to provide evidence of advanced knowledge and skills in many elements of three of the five key competency areas that need to be included in a dossier of supporting evidence: 'Research and Evaluation', 'Strategic and Reflective Practice' and 'Professional Competence'.
