Dr Tom Carroll, Director Carroll Communications,
Social Marketing and Research Consultants

Tom CarrollDr Tom Carroll is a social marketing and research consultant with 25 years of experience on state-wide and national social marketing campaigns in Australia, and over the last decade, in the Asia-Pacific region. This experience has spanned a broad range of public health areas, including alcohol, tobacco, pharmaceutical and illicit drugs, HIV/AIDS, mental health, breast, cervical, bowel and skin cancer, type 2 diabetes, childhood immunisation, nutrition and physical activity, working with population segments across the life course. He has also consulted in the area of social marketing for environmental sustainability.

He provides consultancy services as a senior adviser on social marketing and research to the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and to other government and non-government organisations. He has also undertaken social marketing consultancies and training in China, Cambodia, Vietnam and Hong Kong and in 2007 was commissioned by New Zealand’s Health Sponsorship Council to convene a social marketing Quality Improvement Process. He is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney.

Ms Sue Murray, CEO National Breast Cancer Foundation

Sue MurrayAfter beginning her career in education Sue moved across to the community sector to work for the NSW Cancer Council where she held roles in education, media and communications. She then moved to the role of Executive Director with the AMA (NSW) Charitable Foundation and developed a CD ROM to support school drug education programs while simultaneously working with the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia to facilitate the formation of the State organisation. Sue took up her current position with the National Breast Cancer Foundation in April 2000.

As the CEO Sue has responsibility for developing and implementing strategy to increase participation in, and support for, breast cancer research throughout Australia. Most recently the NBCF has launched the first-ever National Action Plan for breast cancer research which aims to change the way breast cancer research is planned, performed and monitored in Australia.

The National Plan requires $100 million in funding and integral to its success is a well informed and passionate team who are committed to seeing its successful implementation.

Dr Andrew Penman, Chief Executive Officer,
The Cancer Council NSW

Andrew PenmanDr Andrew Penman is a Queensland medical graduate who has had a wide-ranging career as a Public Health physician. This commenced with his involvement in primary health care development in the USA and the developing world. He worked for 13 years from 1983 in a succession of positions with the Health Department of Western Australia, including Chief Health Officer. In 1996 Dr Penman moved to New South Wales to take up the appointment as Director, Disease Prevention and Health Promotion for the NSW Health Department, and in June of 1998, was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of The Cancer Council NSW.
