Overview
The Bachelor of Primary Education (Dean's Scholar) is a 4 year accredited primary teaching qualification for high achieving students.
In addition to studying the subjects in the Australian curriculum, students will focus on areas such as Professional Studies, Aboriginal Education, Learners with Exceptional Needs, and Teaching Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Students.
Dean's Scholars will have access to an academic mentor, extended library privileges, invitations to attend School workshops and seminars, and networking events. There is also the opportunity for casual employment in the UOW Faculty of Social Sciences, community research, or projects supervised by leading practitioners or scholars for 15 hours per year.
Professional Experience is a compulsory component of this course and usually occurs in Illawarra, Shoalhaven, Southern Highlands, and Southern and South Western Sydney schools. Students can also apply for ‘out-of-area’ (rural NSW) or overseas professional experiences.
Students who have achieved a high level of academic performance in the first three years of the degree may complete the fourth year at Honours level.
Students who intend to study part-time should consult with the Academic Program Director at the time of enrolment for advice on progression and timetabling.

Course Learning Outcomes
Students graduating from the Bachelor of Primary Education (Dean’s Scholar) will demonstrate:
- The ability to manipulate academic literature and mandatory documents that relate to research, pedagogy and policy.
- The ability to participate in guided and self-directed enrichment activities on campus, in school and in community settings.
- A developing understanding of the complex multi-faceted role of the teacher and the learning environment.
- Skills as an active professional who is articulate in regards to the theory-practice nexus its role and theirs as the teacher as researcher.
- Emerging skills in regards to problem solving, technology and planning for all learners; differentiation of pedagogical strategies and reflection on practice.
- Higher order thinking in relation to current and future educational challenges.
- A holistic understanding of the equity/inequity balance and social justice issues in Australian society.
Course Structure
The Bachelor of Primary Education (Dean’s Scholar) requires the following:
- The successful completion of 192 credit points comprising:
- 29 core subjects (180cp);
- 2 elective subjects (12cp);
- No more than 60 credit points will be at 100 level; and
- Only 2 elective subjects (12cp) with the prefix EDTR will count towards the degree.
- The successful completion of the Professional Experience components embedded in the course.
- Students must maintain a minimum weighted average mark (WAM) of 80% in each year of enrolment, from and including Year 2, to remain enrolled in the Dean’s Scholar program.

Catholic Education
Students seeking accreditation with the Catholic Education Office (CEO) are required to complete all four EDTR subjects listed in the table below, however, only two of these (12cp) will count towards the degree. To receive full CEO accreditation, students will need to complete additional requirements. Students must liaise with the CEO in regards to the additional accreditation requirements.

Collaborative Delivery
The Catholic Education subjects are partially delivered through a collaborative arrangement with the Broken Bay Institute (BBI). Subjects will be taught by a tutor from BBI. Please contact the School for additional information.
Dean's Scholar

Professional Recognition/Accreditation
This degree is accredited and nationally recognised as a professional teaching qualification. Students seeking work outside NSW or Australia are advised to check with potential employers and other teacher registration authorities for any additional requirements.
All students completing a NSW teacher education course need to pass an approved literacy and numeracy test.
Students seeking accreditation with the Catholic Education Office are required to successfully complete all four EDRT subjects ( EDTR201 , EDTR202 , EDTR203 and EDTR204 ), however, only 12cp will count towards this degree. To finalise CEO accreditation, students will need to complete two additional CEO approved theology subjects within the first five years of teaching. Students need to liaise with the CEO in regards to CEO accreditation.
