Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Autism is specifically designed to provide professionals and parents in multidisciplinary areas with the knowledge and skills required to support the successful learning and employment of individuals on the autism spectrum in a variety of school, home and community settings. Students in this program will review the current research on the autism spectrum and will be guided in analysing and applying this research to implement effective learning and employment programs and to establish community and societal policies and structures to frame these programs. Students will also have an opportunity to explore the latest research and knowledge in relevant areas such as the use of technology, collaborative communities of practice, leadership, transitions, and etiology and biology of autism spectrum disorder.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students graduating from the Graduate Certificate in Autism will be able to:

  1. Review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge of autism spectrum disorder and demonstrate an understanding of the implications for learning, employment and professional practice.
  2. Critically evaluate research and generate ideas for a comprehensive, socially inclusive approach to implementing learning and employment programs for individuals on the autism spectrum.
  3. Demonstrate specialised technical and creative skills to implement learning and employment programs which incorporate the perspectives of individuals on the autism spectrum and their families to inform practice.
  4. Transfer knowledge and guide parents and professionals to create socially inclusive programs that empower the self-determination and self-advocacy of individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.
  5. Make high level, independent judgements to employ evidence-informed practice and create inclusive environments for individuals on the autism spectrum in learning and employment settings.
