Overview

The aim of the Bachelor of Engineering degree is to produce professional engineers who:

- possess the graduate attributes of the University and Engineers Australia;

- possess the fundamental knowledge, skills and attitudes to further develop in their chosen careers;

and

- graduate with the proficiency to compete successfully anywhere in the world.

The success of the degree in meeting this aim is evidenced by the number of graduates employed by large corporations in Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Europe and Asia.

The degree programs offered are enriched by the industry partnerships that exist between the University and industry. Traditionally, Engineering at Wollongong has had close ties with the Port Kembla steel industry and these continue today.

Research activities have diversified over the years with the establishment of major research institutes and centres in fields such as Information and Communication Technology, Power Quality and Reliability.

There are three majors within the degree:

- Electrical Engineering

- Computer Engineering

- Telecommunications Engineering

In addition, four double degrees are offered that provide students with the opportunity to combine their engineering studies with study in other disciplines:

- Bachelor of Engineering - Bachelor of Arts

- Bachelor of Engineering - Bachelor of Commerce

- Bachelor of Engineering - Bachelor of Mathematics

- Bachelor of Engineering - Bachelor of Science

Entry Requirements/Assumed Knowledge

Approximate ATAR: 78.

Assumed Knowledge: Any two units of English plus Mathematics and two units of Science.

Recommended Studies: English Advanced, HSC Mathematics Extension 1 and Physics.

Please refer to the relevant prospectus for the entry requirements for students 21 and over or international students.

Credit Exemption Arrangements

Information about Approved Credit Exemption Arrangements with domestic providers is available in the General Course Rules.

Information about Approved Credit Exemptions with international providers is available at: http://www.uow.edu.au/future/international/apply/credit/index.html

Course Requirements

To attain the Bachelor of Engineering, students must satisfactorily complete at least 192 credit points of the prescribed subjects including a major in one of the available areas of study.

The degree is to be completed in a minimum of four years of full-time study; however, most subjects are scheduled so that it may also be undertaken on a part-time basis, in which case the duration will depend upon the particular circumstances of the student. Progression is by subject, but the various subject pre- and co-requisites must be satisfied.

Students who are considering studying part-time should contact the School to develop a program in consultation with the School Academic Adviser, taking into account their individual requirements.

For holders of TAFE qualifications, programs will be determined on an individual basis but exemptions of up to 48 credit points may apply.

Flexible First Year Option

The Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical, Computer or Telecommunications) offers a first year program of study that is common for all majors.

The Flexible First Year option is available to those students who would like to explore the various engineering disciplines prior to selecting a major area of study.

Upon completion of the first year subjects, students then select their chosen major area of study. This must be finalised prior to the commencement of Year 3. Refer to the Course Program below for further details.

Dean's Scholars Program

Students require an ATAR of above 93 to enter the Informatics Dean's Scholars Program in the first year. Once accepted into the program students need to achieve at Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 75 each year to maintain a place.

Current students can apply for a course transfer into this program after completing a minimum of 48 credit points and performing to the standard of a WAM of 80 or more.

Dean's Scholars Program students must complete all requirements for their respective degrees.

Intake into this program will be limited each year to 15-20 students from across the Faculty.

Dean's Scholars Research Options

Students enrolled in the Informatics Dean's Scholars Program have the option of undertaking a research project that aligns with School's research strengths. Students will need to discuss proposals with the School Academic Advisor prior to enrolling in the elective six (6) credit point subject ECTE355 Scholars Project.

Professional Experience

All Bachelor of Engineering students will need to complete ECTE399 Professional Experience.

This is a zero credit point subject that requires students to undertake a minimum 12 weeks industry experience at an approved professional placement. This should be completed preferably in the period between Years 3 and 4 and be documented in the form of an employment report.

Honours

To be eligible for Honours, students must complete either ECTE457 Thesis (18 credit points) or ECTE451 Engineering Project 1 (6 credit points) AND ECTE458 Engineering Project 2 (12 credit points) in their final year of study.

The degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) will be awarded on the basis of overall performance throughout the course and the subsequent completion of the requisite subjects as listed above.

The classes of honours that may be awarded are Class 1; Class 2 Division 1; Class 2 Division 2 as defined in the Course Rules.

Course Program

The recommended program for full-time, four year minimum course completion requires students to satisfactorily complete the first year before beginning the third year and the second year before beginning the fourth year (with the approval of the Head of School or their delegate, these requirements may be waived under special circumstances).

The program of study is common for all majors until Year 3. Students are required to ensure they have selected the major of their choice in Year 3 in order to ensure they do not have to complete additional subjects.

The formal contact hours, methods of teaching and learning and forms of assessment vary from subject to subject. Full details are provided to students at the commencement of each subject by the subject coordinator.

Students should attend all classes including lectures, tutorials and practical classes.
