Welcome to the Graduate School of Medicine

A message from the Dean

With the opening of the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Wollongong, our first cohort of students was welcomed in January 2007 at an inspirational ceremony in the presence of the Governor of New South Wales, Marie Bashir. Since then, subsequent cohorts of equally talented students have been recruited to study medicine at the University of Wollongong.

Student learning is occurring in purpose-built medical school buildings on the Wollongong and Shoalhaven campuses which incorporate the latest medical education approaches and uses extensive educational technology including computer based learning and audio visual links, and in the regions' hospitals and general practices where over 300 clinical academics support the GSM curriculum. In the later years of the course the majority of our students gain extensive clinical experiences in rural areas throughout New South Wales. Our long term integrated rural placements are supported by staff and local clinicians in ten different locations throughout rural NSW, from Ulladulla to Broken Hill to Murwillumbah and many points between.

We offer a supportive environment for our students to develop into confident and highly competent medical practitioners ready to meet the challenges and rewards of medical practice, particularly in rural, regional and remote communities.

The UOW MBBS has an innovative curriculum that draws on the best evidence of effective medical education, incorporating elements of courses from universities worldwide, that have been extensively developed to meet the unique requirements necessary to practice medicine in regional, rural and remote Australia. We offer a programme that ensures students enjoy the ongoing expertise of practicing doctors in hospital and community settings, as well as participation in large and small group learning activities, on-line learning, clinical skills laboratories and anatomy laboratories. The GSM has attracted highly qualified staff from Australia and overseas. Their expertise guarantees the quality of the programme.

Our campus environments, general facilities, and the picturesque surrounds of the Illawarra and Shoalhaven area provide a context for students to develop a knowledge and skill base that is consolidated in long term integrated rural placements throughout rural, regional and remote New South Wales. UOW offers a truly unique and rewarding educational experience that provides the academic base for a lifetime of practising medicine in a rapidly changing and challenging health care environment.
