Professor John Hogg was appointed as the Foundation Dean of the University of Wollongong's Graduate School of Medicine in August 2004. Professor Hogg holds the MBBS from the University of Sydney and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. John's residency at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital was followed by experience in research and remote practice with the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition at Mawson Base in Antarctica. Subsequently he had some months experience in rural general practice prior to commencing surgical training. After four years of specialist training in surgery in the U.K. he was Senior Registrar in the Professorial Surgical Unit of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital – encompassing both clinical and research experience. In 1977 he was appointed as a Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon in the Illawarra. Since that time, John has served on various governance committees within the Area Health Service and, at various times, chaired the Division of Surgery and the General and Vascular Surgery Section. From 2002 to 2004 he was Chairman of the Northern Illawarra Medical Staff Council, and in 2003 and 2004 was Stream Director of Surgery for the Northern Illawarra. John has been involved in graduate and undergraduate medical teaching for more than 30 years. John has a special interest in the management of work injuries and is a founding partner of IOH Injury and Occupational Health.
