Nagesh Pai is the Foundation Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Wollongong’s Graduate School of Medicine (GSM) and a clinical academic in adult psychiatry at the South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra Area Health service.

Prior to his current appointments, he was the senior staff specialist psychiatrist at Shellharbour Hospital and Lake Illawarra Community Mental Health Service.

Before coming to Australia in 2006, Prof Pai was professor and head of the Department of Psychiatry, KS Hegde Medical Academy in Mangalore, India (2001– 2005). Here he was instrumental in initiating the Centre for Psychiatric Research, established to help psychiatric doctors become involved in clinical research, and had the opportunity to be principal investigator for more than 30 international, multicentre clinical research projects. His research interests include psychopharmacology and metabolic syndromes.

Prof Pai has extensive experience as a medical educator. He started his academic career at the Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore following his postgraduate training at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore. Subsequently he held several teaching positions including assistant professor, reader in psychiatry and associate professor at the Fr Muller Medical College in Mangalore.

Prof Pai is a member of the International Society to Advance Alzheimer Research and Treatment, a life member of the Indian Medical Association, and a fellow of the Institute of Australasian Psychiatrists, Indian Psychiatric Society, Academy of General Education (India) and Behavioural Medicine Society (India).
