Dr Teresa Treweek, Academic Leader Student Affairs (Wollongong), Lecturer in Biochemistry/Physiology
Dr. Teresa Treweek was appointed as a lecturer in biochemistry/physiology for the Graduate School of Medicine in February of 2006. She completed a Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry undergraduate degree at the University of Wollongong in 1999 with Class 1 Honours. She then worked as a research assistant in the field of protein chemistry for Prof. Mark Wilson of the School of Biological Sciences before beginning her PhD programme in 2000 funded by an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA). Supervised by Prof. John Carver (current Head, School of Chemistry and Physics, University of Adelaide) and Prof. Mark Walker (School of Biological Sciences, UOW), Teresa studied the structure function human recombinant molecular chaperone (stress) proteins, alphaA- and alphaB-crystallin, which are involved in many disease states including neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. She has been involved in the teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate biochemistry students for a number of years in both the Department of Chemistry and the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Wollongong. Since completing her PhD in 2003, Teresa has worked in the Department of Chemistry as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate on a project funded by Dairy Australia (with Assoc. Prof. Will Price and Prof. John Carver) investigating the chaperone action of milk proteins. Teresa has considerable expertise in the areas of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and has published her work in many internationally recognized scientific journals.
