The Dr Saroj (Sara) Lakshmi Loomba Commitment to Medicine scholarship was established in 2013 to encourage and support the engagement of medical students and contribution to general practice within Wollongong. Dr Saroj (Sara) Loomba was a dedicated and passionate general practitioner completing forty years of service. She devoted her life to providing community based medical care to her patients and their families, and it was a keen participant in further education and knowledge development. Dr Loomba was an exceptional academic during her medical school days and actively involved with University sports and social events.

In 2013 the Loomba family would generously like to support one(1) Phase 3 student from the University of Wollongong who is currently enrolled and actively engagement within the UOW graduate School of Medicine.

The Rhys Harding Broken Hill Bush Scholarship

Dr Rhys Harding graduated with an MBBS in 2012 and is passionate about rural health. Dr Harding spent Phase 3 in Broken Hill and credits this placement as his best clinical and community experience during medical school. The Rhys Harding Broken Hill Bush Scholarship has been established to give back to the community and support medical students to pursue rural clinical experiences.

The recipient will undertake a Phase 4 Elective or Selective Placement in Broken Hill and demonstrate an interest in practicing rural medicine.

Australian Rotary Health Scholarship For Rural Clinical School Students

Objective To encourage and influence medical students to consider pursuing a medical career in rural Australia upon graduation or following postgraduate medical studies. This Scholarship would have the benefit of enjoying the fellowship of Rotarians and also expose the candidate to aspects of rural community life.
Criteria Applicants for the sponsored Scholarship must meet the following criteria:
  • Scholarships will only be open to Australian citizens attending or enrolled to attend a Rural Clinical School (RCS).
  • To be eligible the candidate must demonstrate a need and must attend the RCS for the entire year. Failure to do so will have the student forfeit further payments.
  • Candidates who hold other Scholarships are not able to apply for this Scholarship (except for John Flynn), but the Scholarship is paid as an addition to Austudy allowance.

Cancer Council Australia is offering a trip to Vienna, Austria for the best essay on a cancer related subject by a medical student currently enrolled at an Australian University.

Every year the World Health Organisation - Collaborating Centre for Cancer Education runs The International Summer School ‘Oncology for Medical Students’.

The aims of the Summer School are:

  1. Helping students to become familiar with cancer care in general practice;
  2. Learning more about cancer-related problems in other countries; and
  3. The interchange of international contacts between the future generation of medical doctors.
What to submit

2013 ACEN Student Scholarship

In 2013 ACEN is offering five scholarships, each valued at $1,500, to assist students undertaking placements. The scholarships are open to final year students in all disciplines.

The aim of the 2013 ACEN Student Scholarship is to support students who will undertake a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) activity in a regional or remote area of Australia as part of their undergraduate or postgraduate education. The placement must be:

  • Undertaken in 2013 in Inner Regional, Outer Regional, Remote and Very Remote locations* which requires students to relocate from their home address
  • Fulltime (4-5 days per week, for a minimum of three weeks duration)
  • Within Australia

2013 John Flynn Placement Program

About The John Flynn Placement Program (JFPP) was established in 1997. Funded by the Department of Health and Ageing, is an important part of the Australian Government's strategy to attract more doctors to rural and remote areas to address areas of workforce shortage and improve the quality of healthcare for local communities. The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) administers the program on behalf of the Government. Medical students enrolled in accredited medical courses at one of 20 participating Australian universities can apply for a place in the program. Each year, 300 students are selected to join the program.
Financial Assistance The JFPP covers the cost of travel and accommodation for students to go on placement and ACRRM provides assistance with these arrangements. In addition to this students are paid $500 per week to cover food and living expenses during the placement.
Criteria To be eligible to apply for the JFPP you must be:
  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited medical course at one of the 20 participating Universities;
  • Able to complete the eight weeks of placements within four years, by the time you complete your degree, if enrolled in an undergraduate medical course;
  • Able to complete the eight weeks of placements in either three or four years, by the time you complete your degree, if enrolled in a graduate medical course.

If you are in receipt of a grant or scholarship, which includes funding for community bonding or other community placement experiences, you will not be eligible to apply for the JFPP. If unsure call the JFPP team.

While students will not need to prepare any written responses prior to this time, all students are encouraged to consider the following:

  • what does the John Flynn Placement Program involve?
  • what appeals to you about the program?
  • are you considering a career in rural practice? Why?
  • can you anticipate any difficulty you might have in completing the program? If so, how might you find a solution to the problem?
  • what qualities or experiences do you have that make you the right person for this program?

RCPA Scholarships in Pathology for Medical Schools

About

The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) makes available to every medical school in Australia and New Zealand annually, a $2000 Scholarship for medical students to pursue a project in the area of Pathology. These projects should be such that the student learns about the principles of the scientific method in the practice of Pathology.

The Graduate School of Medicine is required to support the application and is responsible for selection of the recipient. Professor Peter McLennan and Dr Kylie Mansfield are available for advice.

Applications will be accepted for one of following:

  1. The study of Pathology as the focus of a selective or elective in MEDI604
  2. The performance of a project (research or other) associated with Pathology. For 2013, the following project is being offered by members of the GSM (or IHMRI) and Southern Pathology:
    • Bacterial pathogenicity mechanisms in bladder incontinence.
      This project involves evaluation of the cells present in bladder fluids using Papanicolaou stain to distinguish between vaginal epithelial cells and bladder urothelial cells. The close association of these cells with bacteria will also be examined (Supervisor: Dr Kylie Mansfield (GSM), Dr Alistair Lochhead (Southern Pathology)).
  3. Other suitable Pathology projects will be considered as well.

For the projects, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute at least 150 hours within a 12 month period. This will be negotiated between the Project Leader and the successful student. The student will be paid in two instalments to ensure that requirements of the agreement are being met.

The scholarship may be supervised by more than one supervisor, but at least one supervisor must be a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. The application should outline the project in no more than 200 words, and the application form must be signed by the relevant supervising Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. Previously successful applicants may not reapply.

The successful applicant will be selected on a competitive basis by a selection panel of GSM staff.

The Board of Education of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia requires receiving a formal report on the project following its completion. The RCPA must be acknowledged in any publication arising from the scholarship.

Troy Pocock Scholarship for Medicine

Troy Pocock, a local to the Shoalhaven area, contracted meningococcal disease while on a working holiday in London. Troy died within hours of the initial onset of the disease. He had just turned 21 only days before his death. In April 2004 Troy’s parents, Larraine and Richard along with his brother Scott formed the Troy Pocock Meningococcal Foundation Inc to honour Troy’s memory and fill the void left by the closure of the Meningitis Trust.

With the help of family, friends and community, they have managed not only to fundraise for the cause, but educate the community about this insidious disease. The Troy Pocock Scholarship is the result of that fundraising and the intention of the Troy Pocock Meningococcal Foundation to make an impact in the medical community to fight meningococcal through education of doctors present and future.

Criteria Applicants for the Troy Pocock Foundation Scholarship must meet and address the following criteria:
  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time in Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Wollongong in Spring Session 2013.
  • The successful applicant must be enrolled in their final year of MBBS and enrolled in MEDI604.
  • The successful applicant will commit to preparing an abstract and poster/presentation (part of assessment for MEDI604) relating to Meningococcal (infectious) disease and will agree to make this poster available to the Pocock Foundation.
  • Preference will be given to the study/education of Meningococcal disease.
  • Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia.

This year the program is also open to third and fourth year medical students at Victorian and Western Australian Universities. The program offers scholars a clinical placement with an indigenous health provider.

The First Wave Scholarship program offers you the opportunity to experience General Practice under the guidance of a dedicated General Practice Supervisor.

2013 MIGA Elective Grants Program

MIGA offers up to six Grants of $3,500, each consisting of:

  • For Medical Students - An Elective Grant of $2,000 to assist in funding the Medical Student's elective, including the cost of travel, accommodation and vaccinations
  • For Developing Communities - A Medical Support Grant of $1,500. This is in addition to the Elective Grant and is to assist in the purchase of medical or other aid for the community you visit as part of your elective.

A major benefit of being a Student Member with MIGA is the opportunity it gives you to apply for an Elective Grant.

The Elective Grants Program began in 2004 with the aim of providing financial support for Medical Students pursuing an elective in a developing community.

Through the Program MIGA provides funding for a number of medical students to pursue an elective in an area of personal interest and relevance to their medical studies.

NEW Grant for Indigenous Students

At MIGA we acknowledge the challenges faced by Indigenous medical students in completing their qualifications.

As part of a new initiative in 2013, we will set aside one of the six Elective Grants to award to an Indigenous medical student applicant interested in pursuing an elective placement in a developing community.

  • Wish to undertake an elective program in a developing community and/or country between March 2013 and February 2014

Each year CRANAplus offers a total of six $1000 scholarships. These scholarships provide financial assistance of up to $1000 per applicant, per remote placement. They can be applied to the cost of fares, accommodation and other incidental costs incurred by a student undertaking an undergraduate placement in a remote area of Australia and its external Territories.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this Scholarship the applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student in a health discipline and be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Preference in the first instance will go to CRANAplus Members.

Funding for the same purpose must not have been received from any other source.

Rural Australia Medical Undergraduate Scholarship (RAMUS) Scheme

Level of Enrolment Students enrolled in MEDI601, MEDI602, MEDI603 or MEDI604
Eligibility To be eligible for RAMUS in 2013 applicants must:
  • be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia
  • have lived in a defined Australian rural area for a minimum of five consecutive years, or eight cumulative years, from their fifth birthday up to the time of entering medical school; The ASGC Remoteness Areas (RA) classification is used to determine eligible rural locations for RAMUS. Eligible rural locations are those identified as being within RA categories 2-5. Information on RA categories and an interactive map can be found at DoctorConnect.
  • be studying full-time in an accredited Australian undergraduate or graduate-entry medical degree; Students can apply for RAMUS if they are applying to study medicine, but do not yet have a confirmed university place; or if they are already enrolled in a medical degree, and in any year of their medical studies.
  • agree to be a member of the student rural health club at or affiliated with the university at which they are, or will be, enrolled; and
  • not be receiving any other scholarships, cadetships or bursaries with a combined value of more than $7,000 per year.

Duration Of Scholarship Once awarded a RAMUS, scholarship holders will continue to receive scholarship funds during the completion of the standard length medical degree at their chosen university, provided that they continue to meet the eligibility criteria.
Value Per Annum $10000 (GST exempt)
Criteria Because of the limited number of scholarship places, not all eligible applicants can be awarded a scholarship.

All eligible applications are ranked according to:

  • rural experience, based on the length of time spent living in eligible rural locations from the age of five, up to a maximum of 12 consecutive years. Scaling will be applied to locations, so that the more remote a location the higher the weighting. Having attended a rural primary school for at least one year will also be taken into account;
  • financial need, based on taxable income for the previous two financial years and an estimate of income for the current year; and
  • commitment to working in rural Australia in the future, based on stated intentions and demonstrated previous experience of and/or commitment to rural communities.

Applicants whose applications receive a higher ranking against these criteria will be offered scholarships first.

NSW Rural Doctors Network (RDN), on behalf of the NSW Ministry of Health, is offering up to 12 cadetships to medical students interested in undertaking a medical career in rural NSW.

Cadets receive up to $15,000 per year for the final two years of their medical degree.

Cadets in their final year of study apply for a PGY1 position through the Rural Preferential Recruitment (RPR) process administered by the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI).

Cadets work for two years in a rural NSW Base Hospital within the first three years following graduation. Each cadet is eligible for a relocation allowance to assist with costs associated with their move to the country.

Rural service can be undertaken in major NSW Base Hospitals including Wagga Wagga, Orange, Dubbo, Tamworth and Albury. Queries about locations for rural service should be directed to RDN.

  • Coastal NSW locations are not considered eligible for rural service.

NSW Rural Doctors Network (RDN), on behalf of the NSW Ministry of Health, is offering up to two cadetships to Indigenous medical students interested in undertaking a medical career in rural NSW.

Successful applicants receive a scholarship of $30,000 during their degree. In return, they agree to do two of the first three years of their hospital training in an eligible NSW rural Base Hospital.

Cotton Industry Medical Scholarship 2013

Purpose The Cotton Industry Medical Scholarship provides for a rural medical placement in the Moree cotton growing area.
Duration Of Scholarship 3 years
Value Per Annum $5,000
Eligibility Applicants must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of Australia and be studying medicine at an Australian medical school.

Applicants must be enrolled in:

  • 2nd year of a post graduate medical degree;
  • 3rd year of a five year medical degree; or
  • 4th year of a six year medical degree.

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • an understanding of the realities of rural medical practice (both positive and negative)
  • the motivation to undertake placements in a cotton growing area
  • an understanding of the cotton industry and/or be from a cotton growing area

NOTE Cotton Industry Medical Scholarship recipients are unable to concurrently receive a Bush Bursary and CWA Scholarship or simultaneously hold a John Flynn Scholarship.

Description What is the Scholarship?

The Scholarship will provide a student studying at an Australian Medical School with $5,000 per year for three years to assist with costs associated with their studies.

In return, the student is required to spend two weeks on a rural placement per year in a NSW cotton growing region during their university holidays. Placement programs reflect the enjoyable aspects of rural health practice.

The scholarship is funded and supported by the Gwydir Valley Cotton Growers Association. It is administered by the NSW Rural Doctors Network.

How are payments made?

The selected student will receive financial support in three payments. Payments are made prior to placements and on completion of the two week placement period following submission of an evaluation. Students not honouring their commitment to undertake rural placements will be required to pay back all money granted to them.

Funded by rural Shires of country NSW and the NSW Country Women's Association, applications are open to medical students interested in rural medicine. NB: Bush Bursary recipients are unable to simultaneously hold a John Flynn Scholarship.

Applicants must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of Australia.

Applicants must be enrolled in:

  • 1st or 2nd year of study at the University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, Notre Dame or the Australian National University.
  • 2nd or 3rd year of study at the University of Newcastle, University of New England, University of NSW or the University of Western Sydney.

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • an interest in rural medical practice and lifestyle;
  • an understanding of the realities of rural medical practice (positive and negative); and
  • the motivation to undertake a rural placement as part of the scheme

Australian Rotary Health Indigenous Health Scholarships

  • to provide a scholarship, which can be used to assist Indigenous students to undertake a course in a wide range of health related professions.

Australian Medical Association Indigenous Peoples' Medical Scholarship 2013

Level of Enrolment Students enrolled in 2nd year or later of current medical course
Objective

This Scholarship is open to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders who are currently studying medicine. For the purposes of this Scholarship, an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander is someone who is of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, or who identifies as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and is accepted as such by the community in which he or she lives or has lived. Applicants will be asked to provide a letter from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community organisation supporting their claim.

The Scholarship commences from the second year of the recipient’s medical degree. To receive the Scholarship, the recipient must be enrolled at an Australian Medical School at the time of application, and have successfully completed the first year of a medical degree. However, students who are in their first year of medicine are eligible to submit an application for their second year. Results for the first year will be sought before any award is made.

In awarding the Scholarship, preference will be given to applicants who do not already hold any other substantial scholarship.

Duration Of Scholarship Awarded for full course of study, subject to annual review
Value Per Annum $9000 (Payable in a lump sum). Please note that it is the responsibility of applicants to seek advice from Centrelink on how the Scholarship payment may affect ABSTUDY or any other government payment.
Criteria

The Scholarship will be awarded on the recommendation of an advisory committee appointed by the AMA’s Indigenous Health Taskforce. Selection of the Scholarship recipient will be based on:

  • satisfactory academic performance judged on results achieved;
  • reports from referees familiar with applicant’s work and suitability for a career in medicine; and
  • a statement provided by the applicant describing his or her aspirations, purpose in studying medicine, and the uses to which he or she hopes to put his or her medical training.

Each applicant will be asked to provide a two page curriculum vitae including employment history, the contact details of two referees, and a transcript of academic results.
