Cancer Council Australia is offering a trip to Groningen, The Netherlands for the best essay on a cancer related subject by a medical student currently enrolled at an Australian University.

Every year the World Health Organisation - Collaborating Centre for Cancer Education runs The International Summer School ‘Oncology for Medical Students’.

The aims of the Summer School are:

  1. Helping students to become familiar with cancer care in general practice;
  2. Learning more about cancer-related problems in other countries; and
  3. The interchange of international contacts between the future generation of medical doctors.
What to submit

An essay: “40 years after the war on cancer - How far have we come?
Maximum length 2500 words.

Applicants may wish to focus on any aspect of cancer control.

RCPA Scholarships in Pathology for Medical Schools

About

The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) makes available to every medical school in Australia and New Zealand annually, a $2000 Scholarship for medical students to pursue a project in the area of Pathology. These projects should be such that the student learns about the principles of the scientific method in the practice of Pathology.

The Graduate School of Medicine is required to support the application and is responsible for selection of the recipient. Professors Peter McLennan, Ulrich Bommer and Alistair Lochhead are available for advice.

Applications will be accepted for one of following:

  1. The study of Pathology as the focus of a selective or elective in MEDI604
  2. The performance of a project (research or other) associated with Pathology. For 2011, the following projects are being offered by members of the GSM (or IHMRI) and Southern Pathology:
    1. Activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR growth signalling pathway in colon cancer.
      The project investigates the activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR growth signalling pathway and the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein TCTP, in colon cancer. It involves the analysis of surgical colon cancer samples by immuno-histostaining in the Pathology laboratory. (Supervisors: A/Prof. Ulrich Bommer, GSM and Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI), and Dr. Alistair Lochhead, Southern Pathology)
    2. Schizophrenia Research project.
      This project investigates the role of environmental, psychological, physiological, behavioural and genetic factors involved in the response to antipsychotic treatment (clozapine) in patients suffering from schizophrenia in the Illawarra. (Supervisors: Dr. Elisabeth Frank, Schizophrenia Research Institute and IHMRI, and Dr. Alistair Lochhead, Southern Pathology)
  3. Other suitable Pathology projects will be considered.

For the projects, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute at least 150 hours within a 12 month period. This will be negotiated between the Project Leader and the successful student. The student will be paid in two instalments to verify that requirements of the agreement are being met.

The scholarship may be supervised by more than one supervisor, but at least one supervisor must be a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. The application should outline the project in no more than 200 words, and the application form must be signed by the relevant supervising Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. Previously successful applicants may not reapply.

The successful applicant will be selected on a competitive basis by a selection panel of GSM staff.

The Board of Education of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia requires receiving a formal report on the project following its completion. Also, the RCPA must be acknowledged in any publication arising from the scholarship.

The Troy Pocock Scholarship in Infectious Disease Studies

Troy Pocock, a local to the Shoalhaven area, contracted meningococcal disease while on a working holiday in London. Troy died within hours of the initial onset of the disease. He had just turned 21 only days before his death. In April 2004 Troy’s parents, Larraine and Richard along with his brother Scott formed the Troy Pocock Meningococcal Foundation Inc to honour Troy’s memory and fill the void left by the closure of the Meningitis Trust.

With the help of family, friends and community, they have managed not only to fundraise for the cause, but educate the community about this insidious disease. The Troy Pocock Scholarship is the result of that fundraising and the intention of the Troy Pocock Meningococcal Foundation to make an impact in the medical community to fight meningococcal through education of doctors present and future. Criteria Applicants for the Troy Pocock Foundation Scholarship must meet and address the following criteria:
  • Successful applicant will be in their final year of MBBS at the University of Wollongong and enrolled in MEDI604.

  • Applicants must be Australian citizens or an Australian Permanent Resident.
  • Student will commit to preparing an abstract and poster/presentation (part of assessment for MEDI604) relating to Meningococcal (Infectious) Disease and will agree to make this poster available to the Pocock Foundation.

MIGA Elective Grants Program

MIGA offers up to five Grants of $3,500, each consisting of:

  • For Medical Students - An Elective Grant of $2,000 to assist in funding the Medical Student's elective, including the cost of travel, accommodation and vaccinations
  • For Developing Communities - A Medical Support Grant of $1,500. This is in addition to the Elective Grant and is to assist in the purchase of medical or other aid for the community you visit as part of your elective.

CRANAplus Undergraduate Remote Placement Scholarships

Each year CRANAplus offers a total of six $1000 scholarships.

These scholarships are available to students who as part of their undergraduate course of study in any health discipline at an Australian University, undertake a remote location placement.

The Scholarship provides financial assistance of up to $1000 per applicant, per remote placement, and is intended to provide assistance towards the cost of fares, accommodation and other incidental costs incurred by a student undertaking a remote placement.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this Scholarship the applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student in a health discipline and be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Preference in the first instance will go to CRANAplus Members.

Funding for the same purpose must not have been received from any other source.

Rural Australia Medical Undergraduate Scholarship (RAMUS) Scheme

Level of Enrolment Students enrolled in MEDI601, MEDI602, MEDI603 or MEDI604
Eligibility To be eligible for RAMUS in 2012 applicants must:
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia;
  • Have lived in a defined Australian rural area for a minimum of five consecutive years, or eight cumulative years, from their fifth birthday up to the time of entering medical school;
  • Be studying full-time in an accredited Australian medical degree. Students who are applying to study medicine, but do not yet have a confirmed university place, as well as those already enrolled and in any year of their medical studies, can apply for RAMUS. Both undergraduate and graduate-entry medical degrees are eligible courses for RAMUS.

Applicants must also agree to be a member of their university’s student rural health club and must not be receiving any other scholarships, cadetships or bursaries with a combined value of more than $7,000 per year.

Duration Of Scholarship Once awarded a RAMUS, scholarship holders will continue to receive scholarship funds during the completion of the standard length medical degree at their chosen university, provided that they continue to meet the eligibility criteria.
Value Per Annum $10000 (GST exempt)
Criteria Because of the limited number of scholarship places, not all eligible applicants can be awarded a scholarship.

All eligible applications are ranked according to:

  • the length of time the applicant has lived in a defined rural area between the age of five and commencing medical studies. Scaling is applied to eligible rural locations so that a higher weighting is given to time spent in more remote locations;
  • whether the applicant attended a rural primary school;
  • financial need, based on income for the previous two and the current financial years; and
  • commitment to working in rural Australia in the future.

Scholarships are awarded to those eligible applicants who rank the highest against these selection criteria.

Cotton Industry Medical Cadetship  

Purpose The Cotton Industry Medical Scholarship provides for a rural medical placement in the Moree cotton growing area.
Duration Of Scholarship 3 years
Value Per Annum $5,000
Eligibility Applicants must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of Australia and be studying medicine at an Australian medical school.

Applicants must be enrolled in:

  • 2nd year of a post graduate medical degree;
  • 3rd year of a five year medical degree; or
  • 4th year of a six year medical degree.

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • an understanding of the realities of rural medical practice (both positive and negative)
  • the motivation to undertake placements in a cotton growing area
  • an understanding of the cotton industry and/or be from a cotton growing area
Description What is the Scholarship?

The Scholarship will provide a student studying at an Australian Medical School with $5,000 per year for three years to assist with costs associated with their studies.

In return, the student is required to spend two weeks on a rural placement per year in a NSW cotton growing region during their university holidays. Placement programs reflect the enjoyable aspects of rural health practice.

The scholarship is funded and supported by the Gwydir Valley Cotton Growers Association. It is administered by the NSW Rural Doctors Network.

How are payments made?

The selected student will receive financial support in three payments. Payments are made prior to placements and on completion of the two week placement period following submission of an evaluation. Students not honouring their commitment to undertake rural placements will be required to pay back all money granted to them.

Australian Rotary Health Scholarship For Rural Clinical School Students 

Level of Enrolment Students enrolled in MEDI603 in 2011/2012 (Rural Placements).
Duration Of Scholarship 1 year
Value Per Annum $5000
Criteria Applicants for the sponsored Scholarship must meet and address the following criteria:
  • Scholarships will only be open to Australian citizens attending or enrolled to attend a Rural Clinical School (RCS).
  • To be eligible the candidate must demonstrate a need and must attend the RCS for the entire year. Failure to do so will have the student forfeit further payments.
  • Candidates who hold other Scholarships are not able to apply for this Scholarship (except for John Flynn), but the Scholarship is paid as an addition to Austudy allowance.

Beyond Medical Education Scholarship 2010 

Level of Enrolment Students enrolled in MEDI603 in 2010/2011.
Duration Of Scholarship 1 year
Value Per Annum Up to $5000
About The aim of the Scholarship/s is to encourage and influence University of Wollongong medical students to consider pursuing a medical career in rural Australia following postgraduate medical studies. While Beyond Medical Education, a General Practice Training Provider in North Western Victoria and Western NSW, would encourage the scholarship holder(s) to pursue a career in rural general practice, the successful candidate(s) would have no obligation to take up general practice training after graduation. This Scholarship would allow the successful candidate(s) to take advantage of working with a range of clinicians, including registrars in training, in their rural location, and embrace many aspects of rural community life.

The Scholarship/s is valued at AUD$5,000 and will be administered by Beyond Medical Education. The scholarship may be awarded to between one and five students (that is be of value between $1000 and $5000) depending on the calibre and quality of the applications received.

Criteria Applicants for the sponsored Scholarship must meet and address the following criteria:
  • Scholarships will only be open to Australian citizens attending or enrolled with UOW Graduate School of Medicine and currently in Phase 3 in a rural longitudinal integrated clinical placement.
  • To be eligible the candidate must demonstrate a financial need and must attend the RCS for the entire year. Failure to do so will have the student forfeit further payments.
  • Candidates who hold other Scholarships are not able to apply for this Scholarship (except for John Flynn), but the Scholarship is paid as an addition to Austudy allowance.
Student Obligations
  • The Scholarship recipient would be invited to participate in, and be guests of local Beyond Medical Education training sessions, as applicable.
  • Interviews will be conducted by the University of Wollongong and Beyond Medical Education, in Mudgee in October, and may be videolinked to students in other regions if interviewed.
