Research Areas

Within the GSM, there is a strong emphasis on research and research skills providing a base for academic staff to deliver a current and evidence based curriculum. Several staff have well established national and international research reputations. Research laboratory space is available through the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) and interfaculty collaboration. Research activity is reported through the Faculty Research Committee, which facilitates research in four key divisions:

  • Medical Sciences
  • Medical Education
  • Community / Primary Care
  • Clinical

Specific areas of research expertise and interest include:

  • basic and translational research in physiology and pharmacology of human urothelial and smooth muscle function in incontinence and overactive bladder;
  • role and regulation of translationally controlled tumour protein in cell biology and disease including cancer;
  • biochemistry and molecular biology of chaperone (stress) proteins;
  • basic and translational research into dietary fats/membrane composition/system function in cardiac and skeletal muscle physiology, fatigue and heart disease;
  • linking theory to practice in curriculum and assessment of medical education;
  • application of evidence base to curriculum development in evidence based medicine;
  • teaching and learning through case based curriculum;
  • teaching of clinical competencies;
