AISAM is the Asian Intensive School for Advanced Management. This program is offered by the Australian National Business School (ANBS) Limited. For the past 11 years students from universities around Australia have met and mixed in July in Penang and explored Business in Asia from the inside!
Why "Business in Asia" in Penang? The Malaysian state of Penang is a microcosm of Asia. All of the major ethnic and religious groups are represented in Penang, yet the language of business is English. The Penang Free Industrial Zone (FIZ) was one of the first of its kind to be established in Asia and is a focus for international export activity. Over 750 multinationals operate in the FIZ. AISAM participants visit firms such as Seagate, Eng Teknologi, Osram Opto, DHL and Motorola as part of this annual mid-semester program.
Students attending AISAM are typically MBA students in the later stages of their MBA program with considerable business experience who enjoy the opportunity of completing one or two units in 'fast track' mode. Non-MBA students with extensive business experience are also permitted to attend AISAM. 'The AISAM program should be a compulsory part of all MBA programs. It draws together people, experience and knowledge and adds to it with group work, long hours, some stress and tension -- as well as some fun -- a fantastic learning environment!!' Wayne Crofts AISAM 2006.
In addition to studying Business in Asia during the first week, students also have the opportunity of studying an Asian focused elective during the second week. Options include:
- Strategic Negotiation for International Business,
'the best feature was it is applicable to any situation in life -- private or business' Monicah Gitau-O'Reilly, AISAM 2006.
- Living Supply Chains in International Management
'I would consider this course a must for any senior strategist.' Colin Boldra, AISAM 2005.
- Intellectual Capital Development: The Asia-Pacific Perspective
'This was a really beneficial subject that highlighted how knowledge within an organisation can really add to the bottom line.' Ann O'Gorman-Skarratts, AISAM 2005.
As well as regular class sessions and visits to firms in the FIZ, students receive addresses from government ministers and department heads, representatives of the Penang Development Corporation senior executives and expatriate managers.
While the AISAM program is academically rigorous, it is also socially and culturally fulfilling, and a lot of fun. Academic study is balanced by time off to enjoy the sights, sounds and markets of the tourist resort that is the Island of Penang, or you may choose to laze around the pool and waterfall at the luxurious Hotel Equatorial. 'If I had a chance, I would attend the program again' Daniel Pop, AISAM 2005.
