Each Department shall establish a Departmental Committee and each School shall establish a School Committee.
Terms of Reference
The Departmental/School Committee shall advise its Head:
on the performance of the Department's/School's teaching and research activities including preparation of estimates of Departmental/School expenditure, the allocation of Departmental/School resources of both staff and funds to teaching and research programs, the use of Departmental/ School funds for the purchase of Departmental/ School requirements and for recurrent expenditure, and books and materials recommended for purchase by the Library;
on the introduction of new subjects, or courses, the modification or elimination of existing subjects or courses, including the content or syllabuses and textbooks of such subjects, and the introduction or variation of requirements such as pre-and co-requisites;
shall report on any matter referred to it by its Head, the Faculty of which the Department/School is a member, the Dean, the Faculty Executive Committee, the Academic Senate, the Vice-Chancellor or the Council;
shall consider any matter raised by a member;
shall meet at least three times per session; in addition, meetings may be called at the request of its Head or at the request of at least one-third of its members;
may invite other Departmental/School committees or individual members of other Departments/Schools for the joint discussion of particular items of mutual interest.
Membership
Each Departmental/School Committee shall consist of:
the Head of the Department/School as Chairperson;
all members of the academic staff within the Department/School;
not more than three persons elected by and from the general staff within the Department/School with terms of office of one year;
normally not more than five and not less than three student members elected by and from students enrolled for a degree or diploma and taking subjects or courses offered by the Department/ School for such degree or diploma, to include where possible one student drawn from each of the subject levels;
provided that:
the numbers of general staff and students to be elected shall be determined at a meeting of the academic staff of the Department/School;
in no Departmental/School Committee shall the academic staff be in a minority; such other members of the academic staff in related or other disciplines as the Committee may determine.
